Dear Archway Family and Friends,

I think many of you know that I have three teenagers. I think many of you know that teenagers can be … well, challenging. Mark Twain knew; that’s why he said, “When a boy turns 13, put him in a barrel and feed him through a knot hole. When he turns 16, plug up the hole.” So, how is it going in the Fee household? The other day I asked Madame Fee where she was going. “The store,” she replied, “to pick up a Mark Twain barrel.”

Quarantine can be trying times regardless of your situation, but living up close and personal with fledgling adults can acutely heighten annoyances around things as seemingly minor as bedtimes, study habits, and even hygiene. Last weekend, while hiking East Wing Mountain Trail, I remarked to Madame Fee that I want to start focusing on what I enjoy about my children – to look for the good in them and to make that the substance of our conversation rather than what they could do better/more/differently, which being honestly translated is how they could behave more like me.

Such is really the nature of life at all times, not just in these peculiar circumstances. I can choose to focus on the negative or the positive, and human nature (perhaps influenced by the media) tends to have an unseemly attraction to skew negative. But my sense is that the Good life requires some effort (and/or Assistance) to redirect our attention to what is positive – what is whole and noble. Because it can be found in all places, even in those most curious of beings … teenagers.

Be safe. Be well.

Truly,
Mr. Fee

FACULTY AND STAFF
This week, instead of featuring one teacher, let's celebrate all of them! Teacher Appreciation Week starts Monday, May 4th.

Great Hearts has changed our volunteer approval process for the 2020-2021 school year.  If you would like to be an approved volunteer for school year 2020-2021, or if you were a previously approved volunteer through a fingerprint background check, please continue reading carefully then click on the volunteer link below.  All volunteers, regardless of previously approved status, are required to apply through the Raptor system. It should only take 10 minutes to fill out the requested information. You will receive an answer via email from the Raptor system within 48 hours. The cost is $5.00. All volunteers must be approved through this process; there are no exceptions.

Please note, when selecting the school, the system will not separate Archway and Prep (except Scottsdale).  For North Phoenix Prep|Archway North Phoenix, please choose Great Hearts North Phoenix. The system will approve you for both schools. You can choose multiple campuses if that applies to your family.

As you complete the online application, please note that you will be asked to choose the volunteer position in which you are interested. Choosing a volunteer position does not restrict you from volunteering in another capacity.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact John Lund, Great Hearts Safety Manager at  jlund@greatheartsaz.org .

We look forward to seeing you on campus for the 2020-2021 school year!

NOTICE OF UPCOMING BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

Love and Logic tips for parents:

Over the past month or so, I’ve found myself feeling thankful… time and time again… for the patience I’ve received from others. It’s been a true gift.

It’s made me think of how each simple act of patience leaves others with hope. It’s made me realize how much I struggle with providing it to others. It’s made me realize, anew, that this gift is more valuable, and difficult to provide when we all need it the most.

Like most commodities, the value of patience increases with its scarcity.
When times get stressful, patience often goes into hiding. It gets lost in the shadows. As our minds try to wrap themselves around a world turned upside down, we begin to lose sight of what it means to love others and ourselves.
If you can lose your keys or your smartphone or anything else, you can
lose your patience. No one is immune.
If we’re all at risk of losing our patience, how can we up the odds of holding on to it for the sake of the ones we love?
Take good care of yourself by setting limits with others.
When we try to do too much for others, we often end up with very little to give. Healthy limits allow us to remain loving, and they keep us from becoming resentful. Examples include:
  • I’ll be happy to help you when I see that you’ve already tried to figure it out for yourself.

  • I’ll listen when your voice sounds calm like mine.

  • I allow kids to keep the toys they pick up.

Take good care of yourself by setting limits with… yourself.

Another irony: When we’re critical and demanding with ourselves, we tend to share the favor. Few of us do it on purpose, but we do it nonetheless. We set unrealistic standards for ourselves, stress ourselves out and then find it difficult to provide patience to others. If this applies to you, here’s a question you may need to contemplate:

Would I feel okay treating others the way that I am treating myself?

Thanks for reading!
