DESTINATION
Chefchaouen, Morocco
Let’s visit a small town nestled high in northwest Morocco’s Rif Mountains. Called “The Blue City” or “The Blue Pearl,” Chefchaouen is a treasure not to be missed.
The magnificent colors are said to be a medieval remnant of a population long lost in the area. During the late 15th century, the Spanish Inquisition forced Muslims and Jews out of Europe. Beginning in 1471, the town was founded, essentially as a refugee camp with a prominent Jewish influence.
Following in Jewish traditions, the refugees painted their buildings
blue as a reminder of God’s power above. The tradition continues today, keeping the blue city fresh and near-lost traditions alive.
When vendors set colorful rugs, clothes, paints, and more out for sale, the alleys explode with visual fireworks.

Crescendo
Available on Friday, May 1
|
The Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center has curated an exclusive selection of streaming arthouse films. For example:
Crescendo is inspired by Daniel Barenboim’s West-Eastern Divan Orchestra and Academy Award
® nominated director Dror Zahavi directs this gripping drama as a constantly growing crescendo.
When world-famous conductor Eduard Sporck accepts the task of creating an Israeli-Palestinian youth orchestra, he is quickly drawn into a tempest of unsolvable problems. Having grown up in a state of war, suppression, and the constant risk of terror
attacks, the young musicians on both sides are far from able to form a team. Will Sporck succeed and make the young people forget their hatred, at least for the three weeks until the concert?
In German and English with English subtitles. Not Rated.
Director: Dror Zahavi (Germany 2020) 106 min

YIVO'S ONLINE EDUCATION SERIES
A Seat at the Table
online course
launches on Friday, May 1
I'm excited about the new online course,
A Seat at the Table, a deep-dive into Jewish cooking, recipes, lectures, video demos, and lively conversation. The line-up is an impressive who's who of renowned Jewish chefs and food scholars, featuring Joan Nathan, Niki Russ Federman and Josh Russ Tupper (NYC's Russ & Daughters), Adeena Sussman, Michael Twitty, and more.
With a focus on the Ashkenazi table (food of Eastern Europe), the course, which is presented by YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, begins this Friday, May 1 and runs through August 31st. The lectures use food as a gateway to a broader Jewish history, and recipes will be discussed alongside historical shifts in national identity, border fluctuations, migration, and food traditions of the Sephardic Jews of Spain and Portugal and the Mizrahi Jews of the Middle East and North Africa.
Expect your mind and palate to be broadened and enriched!

Screen-time concerns are on the rise, so many parents are turning to audio podcasts as a fun (and often educational) way to engage kids
—without the screen.
Children's audio content has flooded the airwaves, so it can be a challenge to find the good, appropriate stuff. That's why we look to Common Sense Media. They make recommendations for some excellent kid-friendly podcasts that you and your family will love listening to!

We asked and you said yes! Over 400 member families have unfrozen their memberships so they may financially support our JCC during this time of closure. Their generosity allows us to bring classes, performances, and community into your homes when it is most needed.
To say that we are grateful is an understatement. As a non-profit organization, donor support is always essential. During this unprecedented and incredibly challenging time, it has become critical.
