UK Neurologist Believes MS Diagnosis Guidelines Need Updated
Dr. Jagannadha ‘Jay’ Avasarala, neurologist with the Kentucky Neuroscience Institute (KNI), recently published a study with others from the University of Kentucky’s Department of Neurology based on the fact that symptoms of MS can overlap with another disease known as neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD).
Dr. Avinash Bhakta, colorectal cancer surgeon with the UK Markey Cancer Center and lead author on the study, says the study highlights the importance of the adherence to standard of care for these patients.
“Most colorectal resections are elective in nature, so we want to focus on the use of opioids and sedatives and counsel patients on the need to decrease the use of these drugs before surgery,” Bhakta said.
