Clean Your Chimneys!

As the cold weather rolls in, there's a number of things that the  Township of North Kawartha Fire Department wants you to put on your to-do list:

 Make sure you're checking your chimney before lighting up your fireplace or wood stove! Creosote is a carbon that builds up from burning wood and can cause a fire in the chimney if not properly cleaned out before the winter.

 If you are having a fire PLEASE remember to allow ashes from your stove or fireplace to cool before emptying them into a metal container with a tight fitting lid. Keep the container outside and away from anything burnable!

 Check your CO detectors to make sure the batteries are working. Stoves and fireplaces could leak dangerous gas, which can only be sensed by a working CO detector.

Remember: it's the law to have a working detector outside of every bedroom in your home! For more information, you can always call the Fire Department at 705-656-1224 and they would be happy to help!
