Factors For Selecting A Valve
Choosing the correct valve when designing a piping system isn’t a beginner’s task. Incorrect valves can be selected, if care isn’t taken. So, what do you need to know to begin your search for the right valve? Proper selection of any valve is dependent on requirements that can be divided in to four main categories.
Valve Type
  1. What is the ultimate function of the valve? On/off, control, backflow prevention, etc.?
  2. What is the media? Water, Oil, Gas?

Materials of Construction
  1. Are there chemical compatibility issues with the media and the valve’s composition? Is the media corrosive or destructive to the body, seat or liner?
  2. Are there environmental considerations, such as de-zincification from hard water?
  3. What are the expectations for maintenance over the lifespan of the valve? Will the valve be accessible?

Valve Sizing and Performance
  1. What is the required flowrate?
  2. What is the operating pressure, including upstream and downstream requirements?
  3. What are the minimum and maximum operating temperatures?
  4. Any other design requirements for the piping system?

Actuation, Connections and Certifications
  1. How is the valve going to be operated? Manually? Automatically?
  2. How is the valve to be installed? Threaded pipe? Soldered or brazed? Flanged? Pressed?
  3. What are the applicable industry standards and codes that must be met?
