Fall Fundraising for the AAUW Marin Scholarship Fund
Autumn is here! This is the time of year our branch focuses on raising money for local programs - scholarships for women at Dominican University and College of Marin; sponsorships for 7th grade Marin girls to attend Tech Trek, AAUW California’s STEM camp; as well as sponsorships to send college women to AAUW’s leadership conference NCCWSL. (Hear the 2021 NCCWSL attendees relate their experiences Monday evening at 7 p.m.)
A major fundraiser for us is the December Silent Auction which will be “virtual “once again this year. The auction committee is ready to start collecting items so put on your thinking caps. Popular items include gift certificates, gift baskets, fine jewelry, handmade items, wine and “experiences.”
Be on the lookout for an email announcement next week with details on how you can help.

September's Tech Trek recap by our branch attendees program was a success!
Tech Trek Wearable Inventions
During the mornings of Tech Trek, the girls designed and coded their wearable tech invention. The hat needed decorations that reflected their values. They recorded videos describing what they had made and you can view the videos at:
Thanks for all your support of this outstanding program.

Mary Cain, our newest member, is a new resident of Marin County, having lived the past fourteen years in the Mission/Hayes Valley area of San Francisco. She grew up on a farm in Iowa. She’s one of nine children, and the mother of two grown daughters who were born and raised in Denver. Now retired, she’s spending her days renovating a new home, building a garden, planning trips, and trying to meet new friends and neighbors, in spite of the pandemic.
Mary is a graduate of Northwest Missouri State University and holds Masters degrees in Education from Indiana University and in Psychology from the University of Northern Colorado. She has expertise in Human Resources management and has worked primarily in high tech companies throughout the US and around the world (additional details on LinkedIn). Her professional focus has often been on human rights, equal pay, and fair access to skills training and opportunities for advanced education.
Mary is passionate about music, reading, travel, and creative arts of all kinds - designing and sewing clothing, making jewelry, renovating and decorating homes and gardens - and does her best to combine these interests into trips around the world. She currently lives with her husband, Jess Chan, and Ripley, an eighteen-year-old Russian Blue cat who (correctly) thinks she’s in charge of her human caretakers.

TTAG: Tech Trek Alumnae Group, The Marin Branch hosted our first Tech Trek Alumnae Group gathering on August 14th at Santa Margarita Park in San Rafael. Our young STEMinists had a chance to meet their Marin counterparts “in-person”, share experiences and discuss future plans. Next meetings are scheduled: October 10th – China Camp at which we will encourage the alum to identify a group interest from the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This will be the 2022 focus as it relates to STEM activities, speakers, and activism.
November 7th – Alum will meet to create crafts to be featured at the 2021 AAUW Auction to raise funds to support group activities. If you are interested in hearing more OR maybe you have access somewhere interesting for a field trip, have contact with a potential corporate sponsor, or know an inspirational speaker, please contact Melanie Chancellor and Angela Nuckles at MarinTTAG@yahoo.com
Headlines: Behind the Headlines will meet by Zoom on October 13 at 6:00 PM. The speaker will be Barbara Creed, who will again walk us through three current Supreme Court cases on the docket for this term. She will also be talking about how the Court handles emergency applications on what is known as the “shadow docket.” An example of a recent emergency application was the effort (unsuccessful as you know) to prevent the Texas anti-abortion legislation from going into effect. Contact Cherie Sorokin at cheryl.sorokin@gmail.com if you want to join the meeting and are not already on the email list for this interest group.

Did you know that even though women make up more than half of the U.S. workforce and they receive most university degrees at virtually every level they remain significantly under-represented at the highest rungs of almost every field: corporate, government, nonprofit, education, law, medicine, finance and banking, and the military? In 2020, there were only 36 women leading America’s biggest companies — that’s only about 7% of all Fortune 500 CEO’s.
The problem is not a lack of qualified potential leaders to fill the roles. The main problem is the fact that there are barriers and biases that keep women from attaining the highest – and most highly-compensated – leadership roles. Addressing gaps in leadership, working with women and girls to develop leadership skills, and helping women and girls to successfully confront bias and barriers are all fundamental parts of AAUW’s programming and advocacy. Check out more on our Leadership programming on our website: AAUW.org/issues/leadership. By the way, the National Conference of College Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL) is one of AAUW’s core leadership programs. NCCWSL is the focus of our branch meeting on Monday, October 4 at 7:00 pm.

Autumn is upon us along with Covid-19 booster shots. Hopefully all will be available soon just in time for the upcoming winter season.
The Branch Board met by Zoom on September 13. Below are some items of interest discussed at the meeting.
Chris O’Neill reported that almost all members have renewed. We lost a few and she is continuing to contact those who have not gotten their dues in. She continues to work hard to have as many as possible renew. Chris will be highlighting our fifty year members for the newsletter each month. We have a new member, Mary Cain.
Dale Satake reported that in spite of the second year of the pandemic, our members continue to be generous. Our branch continues to be one of the leaders in member donations in California and the US. Also, increasing our designations to almost 100% to the Greatest Needs Fund is admirable. Seeing new donors and an increase in the number of individual donors is a plus.

The Board approved Angela Nuckles’ request to allocate $500 seed money to support the Tech Trek Alumnae Group with their planned programs. ( See article above.) The plan is that they will then become self-supporting. Nancy Lubamersky explained the history of the Scholarship Fund. This review is always helpful for new members as well as those who have been with AAUW Marin for several years. Angela Nuckles then proposed a fundraising goal for 2021-2022 be $18,500. This was approved by the Board.
The next Branch Board meeting will be in person when we will again visit the goals for the 2021-2022 year.
