Vol. 4, Issue 5 | January 2021
Message from the Superintendent
Dear HUSD Community,

In this first issue of 2021, I’m happy to be highlighting the wonderful accomplishments of students and staff. After living under much uncertainty due to the pandemic and a tumultuous national election, it was reassuring to witness the peaceful transition of power from one administration to the next during last week’s inauguration.  Regardless of your political leaning, the ceremony brought hope that our country will focus more on what unites us than on what divides us. I was thrilled to see Vice President Harris, a Bay Area native, become the first woman and first woman of color be sworn into that office. Additionally, reading about the distribution of the vaccine to more and more communities, fills me with hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

But perhaps what stayed with me the most from last week’s inauguration were the inspiring words of Amanda Gorman, the National Youth Poet Laureate that earned great praise for her poem “The Hill We Climb.” Her presence at such a historic ceremony provided an important reminder of why we must seek to elevate the voices of our youth. In this issue of the Horizon you’ll hear how our own students inspired us with spoken word and song during their participation in the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. birthday celebration. Students will continue to have opportunities to showcase their talents in the coming months. In February, AASAI will host its annual Oratorical/ VAPA Festival. Keep reading below to find more details about that opportunity.

Sincerely,
Matt Wayne, Ed.D.
Superintendent
