NYMC Forms Affiliation for Graduate Medical Education with Landmark Medical Center in Rhode Island

NYMC and Landmark Medical Center in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, announced an academic affiliation designating the hospital as a teaching site for the education of NYMC's graduate medical students. The partnership establishes a residency program in internal medicine at the medical center and will be NYMC's first partnership of this kind in Rhode Island, growing its network of affiliated sites. NYMC and TCUS host 14th COVID-19 Symposium
 
Vaccines and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on education were the focal points of the 14th edition of the COVID-19 Symposium series, presented by NYMC and TCUS on August 26. Hosted by Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer of NYMC and provost for biomedical affairs at TCUS, the symposium took a closer look at how the pandemic changed medical education, how early childhood educators adjusted to virtual learning, how to move forward with reintroducing students in the classroom, as well as the latest on vaccine protection and vaccine safety in pregnancy. Campus Shuttle Resumes Operation 

The NYMC campus shuttle, operated by the Office of Public Safety, has resumed operations Monday through Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. with limited seating. The shuttle operates on a loop, once per hour through the NYMC campus with stops at student housing, 7 Dana Road, 19 Skyline Drive, Medical Education Center, 19 Bradhurst Avenue, Westchester Medical Center and the School of Health Sciences and Practice. Riders must show a valid NYMC identification card, wear a mask and distance from other riders. The schedule will remain in effect until October 1, when the Office of Public Safety will review ridership and the community's needs. Shuttle drivers may not deviate from the route but may stop along the way to pick up or drop off riders at other points along the loop.
Chancellor Halperin Shares his Thoughts on What Data from the 2020 U.S. Census Means for White Supremacists

Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer, shared his thoughts on recently released data from the 2020 U.S. Census including how a democratic government must reflect the population it serves, much to the dismay of white supremacists, in an opinion piece, The New United States Census and the Chant of White Supremacists," published in The Globe Post on August 18, 2021. 
GRANT NEWS
Mitchell S. Cairo, M.D., professor of pediatrics, medicine, pathology, microbiology and immunology, and of cell biology and anatomy, received a $1,441,140 award from the Department of Defense to support "Novel Combinatorial Targeted Chimeric Antigen Receptor Natural Killer Cell Based Cellular Immunotherapy with Adjuvant Immunomodulation in Patients with AML." He also received a $250,000 award from the Alex Lemonade Stand Foundation for research on "Targeting tumor associated macrophages in Metastatic Ewing Sarcoma (ES)."
ACCOLADES
Five members of the NYMC community are among the 2021 Doctors of Distinction honorees sponsored by the Fairfield and Westchester Counties Business Journal. They will be recognized at a virtual event on September 23.

Karen M. Murray, M.D. '99, associate dean for admissions for the School of Medicine and associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology, and Lauren S. Bader, M.D. '12, G.M.E. '15, will be honored with Caring for All Awards; a Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Elaine Healy, M.D., clinical assistant professor of medicine; Sudhir Vaidya, M.D., clinical associate professor of family and community medicine, will receive a No Land Too Far Award; and the Promise for the Future Award will be presented to Mathias E. Palmer, M.D. '21.

Robert W. Amler, M.D., M.B.A.dean of the School of Health Sciences and Practice and vice president of government affairs, was a speaker on a panel on "Navigating the COVID-19 Vaccines," sponsored by the Human Resources Council of the Business Council of Westchester on August 23.

Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A.chancellor and chief executive officer, presented "Jewish Quotas for Admission to Medical and Dental Schools, 1920s -1960s: A National Perspective," at a Jewish Historical Society of South Carolina webinar on August 22.

Esther L. Sabban, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, was elected secretary-general of the International Regulator Peptide Society, a professional association for students, scientists and scholars interested in the physiology of peptide actions in brain and periphery, and cutting-edge findings across all aspects of peptide function in translationally compelling areas of research.
According to the U.S. Department of Education, the national cohort default rate is 9.7 percent. After completing an analysis, Anthony M. Sozzo, M.S.Ed., M.A., associate dean for student affairs and director of student financial planning and student activities, is pleased to announce the ten-year average default rate for NYMC graduates is 0.81 percent.
