We have officially reached the end of the semester, and while students and faculty prepare for final exams, our community also continues to exemplify how liberal arts capacities, such as historical perspectives, global experiences, and varied methods of data collection, are crucially important. We're  proud to see the many ways in which you have sustained and built intellectual and social communities from beyond campus!

Steve Vallas, Professor of Sociology, received additional funding on an existing grant from the National Science Foundation to lead a team including H.C. Robinson, Associate Professor of Law and Sociology, and colleagues across Northeastern University to expand on their work, titled "Work Situations of the Logistics Workforce Under Emergency Conditions."

Carie Hersh, Associate Teaching Professor in Sociology and Anthropology was selected as a recipient of a Northeastern University Full-time Non-Tenure-Track Faculty Fellowship. She will develop an applied anthropology introductory course,  Making Anthropology Public,  and create an  Experiential Public Anthropology lab  space to teach students how to write and produce media-rich dossiers as applied anthropologists .

"Comics That Stare Into the Face of Terror and Loneliness," a column reviewing two graphic novels by Hillary Chute, Distinguished Professor of English and Art + Design, was published by the New York Times Book Review.

Sari Altschuler, Associate Professor of English and Associate Director of the Humanities Center, published an op-ed in The Washington Post titled " Covid-19 is forcing us to dwell in uncertainty. History can help."

Annie Glass, a criminal justice major, shared with  News@Northeastern  her experience on co-op as a public security officer at Boston Medical Center amidst the COVID-19 pandemic .

Students in the Social Impact Lab have awarded a $10,000 grant to South End Community Health Center as part of this year's Northeastern Students4Giving experiential philanthropy program. The funding will support an integrated behavioral health group for adolescents and young adults struggling with behavioral health concerns.

  Achievements and Awards 

Qianqian Zhang-Wu, Assistant Teaching Professor of Multilingual Writing and Multilingual Writing Coordinator, received a Hong Liu China Studies Research Award. The award is granted from the Northeastern Asian Studies program to support research on the academic writing experiences of Chinese international undergraduate students.

Matthew Hitchcock, PhD candidate and Assistant Director of the Writing Program, has won the Outstanding Graduate Student Award for Teaching from the Office of the Provost at Northeastern University.

Molly Nebiolo, PhD candidate, has won the Outstanding Graduate Student Award for Humanics from the Office of the Provost at Northeastern University.

Writing as Healing During COVID-19: "Chronicle of Healing" with Cat Tyc


Over the course of the week, Cat Tyc, writer and artist, will offer daily readings and viewings to inspire prompts for a chronicle of healing: a writing journal that each participant will keep with reflections on the affective spaces we inhabit, and how to acknowledge their impact in our lives. At the end of the week, the group will meet online to discuss and share writing as well as complete an active listening writing session together.

Social Impact-athon for COVID-19


During the Social Impact-athon for COVID-19, participants will collaboratively award $10,000 to a Boston nonprofit fighting the pandemic in the city.
 All current Northeastern students as well as Human Services and Northeastern Students4Giving alumni are invited to participate.
