A Tribute to Dennis Mangers!
We at the Office of Arts & Culture would like to express our sincerest thanks to Dennis Mangers as he exits his formal role with the City of Sacramento and starts a new stage of his life. Dennis Mangers has been a driving force for the arts and arts education in Sacramento. He championed the launch and subsequent implementation of the Creative Edge Plan, engaging the entire community in creation of a comprehensive vision to strengthen the cultural vitality of our city. Instrumental in getting arts education to the forefront of the agenda in the City, Dennis worked with Mayor Steinberg and an array of influential education leaders to come together with the arts community in support of arts education in the County in 2018. And more recently, as our nation’s creative economy has faced one of its most challenging crises in recent memory, Dennis advocated tirelessly to ensure Sacramento’s creative economy was not forgotten as the City provided relief to those struggling as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Members of the City of Sacramento’s Arts, Culture and Creative Economy Commission are key partners in executing on the bold goals outlined in the Creative Edge plan. Two of our board members are ending their terms on the Commission in 2020 and we would like to express our deepest gratitude for their significant commitments of time and energy to the Commission. Commissioner Maya Wallace has been a significant champion for our creative economy and an outspoken advocate for racial and cultural equity – leading the City’s Race and Cultural Equity Taskforce and spearheading the development and adoption of the Race and Cultural Equity statement. Commissioner Luisa Lavulo has been a steadfast representative of District 8, ensuring the voices and needs of District 8 were front and center during commission discussions. Thank you both for your service.
If you are interested in applying for a seat on the Arts, Culture and Creative Economy Commission, you may submit an application here. Commissioners are appointed by Councilmembers and the Mayor. Applicants must live in the City of Sacramento and have a demonstrated history of community involvement or interest in fostering of the arts, innovation, or tourism of the city. Members shall have past or current experience as an educator, supporter, advocate, administrator, curator, historian, or critic of the arts. No current elected officer or employee of the city shall be appointed to the commission.

Recipients of Round 2 Creative Economy Recovery Grants Announced
Nearly 250 individual artists, arts and culture nonprofits and creative businesses have been selected to receive reimbursement grants from the second round of funding from the City of Sacramento’s Creative Economy Recovery program.
“We are grateful we were able to provide financial support to the local creative economy during this time of critical need,” said Megan Van Voorhis, Cultural & Creative Economy Manager. “The Creative Economy Recovery program is one of the most robust arts and culture funding initiatives the City has ever executed. Thank you to our Mayor and Council for their leadership and to staff for executing the program to uplift and support our cultural and creative community.”

Living Quilt Installation by Artist In Residence Jane Ingram Allen
On November 21st, environmental artist Jane Ingram Allen installed a temporary public artwork, "Living Quilt for Sojourner Truth," at Sojourner Truth Community Garden in Sacramento's District 7. Joined by Mayor Steinberg, District Councilmember Rick Jennings, District 7 Parks Commissioner Devin Lavelle, and staff from the Office of Arts & Culture and Youth, Parks, and Community Enrichment, the artist ceremoniously laid quilt squares, based on the traditional North Star pattern, onto a bed woven from local tree branches and grapevines. This quilt of handmade paper and local seeds, designed and crafted by the artist, will produce an ever-evolving artwork that will bloom with the seasons, produce food and habitat for wildlife, and eventually dissolve as compost to nourish the earth.

DEADLINE EXTENDED!: Request for Qualifications
Artist Roster for February 2021 - December 2025
NEW DEADLINE: January 8, 2020
All California and US-based artists are invited to submit their qualifications for inclusion in the Sacramento Artist Roster. Public artists and studio artists are encouraged to apply. The Sacramento Office of Arts + Culture manages the Art in Public Places Program for the City of Sacramento. The Artist Roster will primarily serve as a resource for the selecting artwork through a public panel selection process.
Once an artist is accepted, they are retained on the Roster until it expires at the end of December 2025. All artists will be notified to reapply in September of 2025 for a new Roster. While the Roster is active, a call will open every September for additional artists to be added. Artists already accepted on the Roster during the initial call, do not need to reapply until the roster is completely refreshed in 2025. Accepted artists on the Roster may request to update their information and artwork at any time during the roster period.

Race and Cultural Equity Highlights & Resources
Sacramento Poet Laureate Andru Defeye has just launched a new Sacramento Poetry Salon with the Zero Forbidden Goals collective, taking aim at cultural equity in the creative sector by developing a new online space for conversations around diversity, representation, and equity across Sacramento’s literary arts world
.
While observing public health regulations for the duration of the pandemic, Sacramento Poetry Salon will be broadcasting performances and panel discussions, organizing community activations, and even hosting Defeye’s official coronation as Sacramento Poet Laureate via the new Facebook page.

The California Arts Council announced the opening of its 2021 grant season, with applications now being accepted for two of its six grants, responding to the current and urgent needs of the state’s arts workforce and businesses. For more information, click here.
Grant Opportunity: Living Cultures Grant
The Living Cultures Grant Program seeks to sustain and strengthen traditional arts in the state of California with grants of $5,000 to California-based nonprofits and tribal entities, as well as other organizations who work with fiscal sponsors. Projects involving any genre of traditional art—including but not limited to dance, music, foodways, material arts, and oral traditions—are welcome. For more information, click here.
