A Message from the Associate Dean
Caroline Schauer
Academically speaking, summer is here. After our spring term on lockdown, glued to our screens, I hope you find time to get outside. As the temperatures rise, take a moment to reconnect with nature and for quiet reflection. Congratulations to those faculty whom are being promoted and our new emeriti.

Professor Steve May Receives Funding from National Science Foundation

Congratulations to MSE Professor Steve May for his grant on “Uniting Lithographic Patterning and Topochemical Reaction for Processing of Functional Oxides for Electronic Applications” to research new nanomanufacturing processes to realize novel patterned materials. The new manufacturing strategy combines industrially relevant and scalable processes used to pattern materials with low-temperature chemical reactions to create oxide-based structures with tunable properties that can be reconfigured in response to external stimuli. The dynamic nature of these structures could serve as a platform for a new generation of adaptive electronic, optical, or sensing devices.

Professor Franco Montalto Appointed to NYC Panel on Climate Change

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has appointed CAEE Professor Franco Montalto to a 20-person New York City Panel on Climate Change (NPCC). He joins other university and non-profit climate experts to “help New York City further expand its climate adaptation efforts by providing authoritative, actionable science on future climate impacts.” Says Montalto, “As the COVID-19 pandemic has clearly shown us yet again, risk exposure is highly uneven. I am grateful for this opportunity to apply my engineering skills to help conceptualize infrastructure and policies that will reduce climate risks, especially in the city’s most vulnerable communities.”
Professors James (Jim) Mitchell and Raj Mutharasan will be transitioning to retirement and have each been appointed Professor Emeritus.
Yalcin Ertekin, Andrei Jablokow and Robert Swan, Jr. have been promoted to full teaching/clinical positions, effective September 1, 2020.

Faculty Response Requested: Drexel’s Climate Year

A University team, including the Sustainable Water Resources Engineering lab in CAEE, along with local partners, is working together to make academic year 2020-2021 Drexel’s Climate Year. As part of this work the team is supporting a model of experiential learning that links student learning directly to climate and sustainability processes and outcomes here at Drexel.

Please take this survey if you already incorporate climate and sustainability issues into courses, if you interested in doing so, or are planning project-based courses for the coming academic year, and would like to connect your students to real-world challenges and research questions.

Global Engagement Summer Learning Community
