Keeping King's Chapel's members and friends connected each week while we're "Physically Closed but Spiritually Open."
Spotlight On:
On June 19, 1865, word of the Emancipation Proclamation finally reached the last enslaved people in Texas, two years after it was issued by President Lincoln. Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S. and celebrates African-American history and heritage. This week King's Chapel observes Juneteenth with moments of remembrance, education, celebration, and calls to action. Join us as we affirm and celebrate Black lives and culture.

From the Minister
My Dear Friends-

Our lessons for Sunday give us the story of Hagar and her infant son exiled to the desert with only a bit of bread and a skin of water. As we listen the story of their journey, does it speak to us of times in our own lives when we've felt far from the familiar comforts of "home"? Do we smile ruefully at the irony of being stuck at home even as the "home" of our normal lives and routines seems far away? Perhaps, witnessing the renewed struggle for justice in our streets, we imagine "home" as the promise of liberation and equity for those who've long suffered under the yoke of oppression. Perhaps we hear the echoes of Hagar's story in the lyrics of James Weldon Johnson's "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing."

As we move through this week, affirming and celebrating black lives and culture, reflecting on our relationships with our fathers, may we be alive to the resonances and echoes of the stories we hear, the stories we tell, and the stories we inhabit.

In faith and love,

David

From the Bench

This Sunday, Alison LaRosa and Brian Church combined their talents in recording a new piece by Daniel Gawthrop, "He that Keepeth Thee":

Fear thou not, for I am with thee, fear thou not; be not dismayed; for I am Thy God: I will strengthen thee; I will help thee.                         Isaiah 41:10

I shall lift up mine eyes unto the hills
From whence cometh my help.
My help cometh from the Lord.
He that keepeth thee will not slumber.
The Lord is thy keeper; the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand.
The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.
The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.
                                   Psalm 121:1-7

The composer wrote:
"The Center for Latter-day Saint Arts in New York City recently conducted a Call for Proposals in connection with their project called "Art for Uncertain Times." They announced that they would award 50 micro-grants to artists in all media to create works of art in response to the Covid19 health crisis. My own proposal was among those selected to be funded, and I composed a piece for two voices and piano which is designed to be sung either as a vocal duet or by a small choir."

At press time, Dan Perry is also hard at work in his turret, creating an a cappella arrangement of "Lift Every Voice and Sing". Be sure to tune in on Sunday to enjoy the fruits of his labor!

Looking Back
Theology on Tap

Our first virtual Theology on Tap was a success! We gathered to talk about the movement of the Holy Spirit in these tumultuous times, and many shared their experiences of the Spirit-on an individual level and in the context of community. If you'd like to join us for rich conversation and deep questions, mark your calendars for the third Wednesday of the month! And send your ideas for future topics to David Waters at  [email protected].

Heinrich Christensen | Live from Methuen!

In case you missed the live-stream, the recording of Heinrich's recital in Methuen is available here.

The Boston Globe published this article on the fascinating history of the organ in Methuen.

Conversations with the Educators

On June 11, King's Chapel History Program staff, King's Chapel clergy, and congregants engaged in an important conversation about the importance of confronting difficult history. This event was part of a larger conversation about the role and relevance of history to our present moment. To know more of their discussion, click HERE
You may have noticed that we dipped our toes in the water this past week and had our video editor Alex Enman put together a couple of short virtual choir videos for the Sunday service. Here they are if you'd like a second look.

First, Mary S ears, Heather Holland, Tom Gregg, and Dan Perry singing Daniel Pinkham's setting of  "The Forman Benediction":   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60Vv72ckodY

And Heinrich's arrangement of "How Can I Keep from Singing", performed by Emily Bieber-Harris, Hannah Carlson, Jennifer Webb, Alison LaRosa, Andy Troska, Sam Rosner, Brian Church, and Albert Craig:     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfk7bENQPcY

Music and Meditation Mondays | A New YouTube & Social Media Series

This week's music and meditation video features a bit of Bach on our organ.

We are planning to add a new one of these every Monday on our social media channels with the hashtag #MusicAndMeditationMonday.  Look on the King's Chapel YouTube playlist each Monday.
From our Community Action Committee
Thanks to the members of King's Chapel who contributed to the Louise D. Brown Peace Institute, helping them to exceed their goal of $400,00 this year. King's Chapel also exceeded its goal of $10,000 raising $11,019 with the combined annual sponsorship and gifts to the Mother's Day Walk for Peace. This underscores our support for the important work they do during these especially difficult times of Covid-19 and the horrifying murder of George Floyd.

The Institute is hosting a dialogue on Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m. for fathers impacted by murder. Funds raised will to provide re-entry kits to incarcerated individuals as they are released and return to their communities. A donation to this event would make a meaningful Father's day gift.
