ADVANCED CRAFT WORKSHOP: FICTION

This two
-day workshop is designed to address the needs of the intermediate or advanced fiction writer. In an intimate setting (10 students maximum), registrants--with the guidance of an experienced instructor--workshop pages from a short story or novel excerpt, submitted in advance. This experience (modeled after the MFA workshop style) is an invaluable opportunity for writers to both receive and offer constructive criticism, delve into the more complex elements of writing, and take their craft to the next level.
Applications close on Thursday, September 5, at midnight. Everyone who is accepted will be notified by Monday, September 16.

Jess Hagemann
is the author of the debut novel Headcheese. She is an award-winning author and accomplished biographer. She previously taught creative writing at Benedictine University before founding Cider Spoon Stories, a ghostwriting and editing company, in 2015.

Solving the Mysteries of Plot

For many of us, plot is the most mysterious aspect of writing fiction. It's also the backbone of a good story. This class will examine varieties of narrative structures, ways to keep your scenes moving, mistakes to avoid, and tips for getting your story unstuck. Whatever your genre or skill level, you will learn fresh approaches for telling the story you're trying to tell.

Your plot has stalled (overall or in a particular scene), and you want to know how to get it moving again.

ONLINE CLASS
Creating, Using, and Selling Your Copyright
Wednesday, August 7, 2019
6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Learn the basics of protecting your copyright, using other authors' copyrighted material (fair use), and negotiating contracts to sell your copyrighted work to publishers and others.
If you've wondered
whether you have to place any sort of mark on your copyrighted material to indicate that it's copyrighted, take this class.
If you're using song lyrics in your writing, take this class. Or, if you have questions about publishing contracts, take this class.

Sylvester Shelton (Georgetown) has published his novella Amelia in Kindle. In July 1937, Amelia Earhart vanished somewhere in the south Pacific. "Lost at sea" is the official story. Commander Thompson, naval intelligence officer uncovers the details of Earhart's disappearance. His declassified report is the narrative for this roman à clef. Learn more here.
Lynne Kelly (Conroe) is happy to announce the release of her middle grade novel Song For a Whale. The book is about Iris, a tech whiz and the only deaf student at school, and her quest to find a lonely whale to show him she understands his unusual song. Learn more here.
