Early literacy skill development provides a foundation for later academic achievement. In recent years, San Joaquin County's third grade literacy proficiency has increased five percentage points (39% in 2018 from 34% in 2013); however, it still lags behind the California state average (49%). The Community Event & Activity Sponsorship Mini-Grant is one way First 5 San Joaquin is working with local partners to help equip families with resources and connect them to supportive services. Grant amounts range from $250 to $1,000.
LEARN TO SWIM!
Drowning is one of the most common causes of accidental death in children, so being able to swim is an essential life-saving skill. During August, the Pacific Swim School will be offering discounted swim lessons, for $25, to families who are participating in Medi-Cal or WIC. View more info.
ABC AWARDS
The
Action on Behalf of Children (ABC) Awards are presented in special recognition to those who care about children in San Joaquin County. The awards recognize those outstanding members of the community that are doing great work on behalf of children. Nominations are now being accepted through September 13.
