A Note from Headmaster Philabaum
Greetings families,
It was wonderful to see so many of you at conferences this week! Thank you for your grace and partnership in helping your children thrive in their classrooms in the quarter ahead. As said last week, we are more than happy to continue these conversations at any point. Please reach out to us at any time if you would like to meet together at a future point.
I wanted to share a few announcements today.
First, we are rapidly approaching the groundbreaking of our new home, Archway Roosevelt! As we make progress, the number of announcements related to Roosevelt will begin to pick up. Rather than email each of these for you in separate formats, we have carved out the first section of our Athenian Echo to give you all of the information we have in one convenient place. We are calling it “The Roosevelt Review.” You can expect to find information regarding events, building updates, and of course, enrollment, every week in our weekly newsletter. This section can be found below, immediately following the “Upcoming Events” section of the Echo.
Second, as we enter the second quarter, we are thrilled to be able to relaunch the age-old tradition of taking our students on regular field trips. We know that our Kindergarten students were first in line this quarter, going on an exciting adventure to Tolmachoff Farms!
There is an important amendment to our mask policy with respect to field trip transportation. It was recently announced by Great Hearts that there is a federal policy mandating masks on all student transportation to and from field trips and designated school events. Moving forward, we will ask all students and faculty to wear masks on the buses to and from the location. This policy will remain in effect as long as the federal mandate remains in effect. We will make sure all field trip permission forms moving forward include this information as well. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions at all about this.
Finally, please know we are continuing to hold our regular monthly Coffee with the Headmaster events. Our next meeting is this upcoming Friday. We will be moving these from 8am to 8:30am, to allow time for set-up. The sign-up can be found below. If you try to sign up and slots are full, please reach out to me and we can make sure to amend the Sign-Up Genius to add additional space. This information simply helps us know which room to use for the event.
As always, I encourage you to read carefully through the Weekly Echo. I know there is a lot here, but the intention is to help put all of the important information we want to get to you in one central location rather than in many separate emails. There are further announcements such as our Tardy Protocols, the Read-A-Thon, and much more below! If you ever have questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Thank you very much for your time, and I look forward to a wonderful second quarter!
With Devotion,
Stephen Philabaum

Groundbreaking Event
Great Hearts Roosevelt will be officially breaking ground on Tuesday, October 26 at 8am! This is an exciting event, and an opportunity for the ATE community to celebrate the long awaited launch of the building of our new home! Community leaders in Buckeye, such as the mayor, councilmen, congressmen, and local church leaders, will be in attendance, along with leadership from Great Hearts, to celebrate this event. We are working to livestream this event to students at school and parents at home, and will be doing a test run of this in the week ahead to ensure that the technology will allow this to happen. We plan will have this recorded as well. We will keep you posted on this development next week. Please save the date and time!
Chat with the Roosevelt Prep Headmaster, Tony Cruz
October 22, 2021 from 4pm to 5pm, Archway Trivium East MPR
Join us right after pick-up for some informal, relationship-building time with Headmaster Cruz to answer any lingering questions you might have about Great Hearts Roosevelt. We will have coffee and cookies and just spend time together. Thank you!

Enrollment Survey
If you have not already done so, please take a moment to complete this brief survey in the parent portal. Your answers will be used to help Great Hearts gain a better understanding of current family demand and facility needs for the Roosevelt campus. If you at any point change your answer, please take a moment to reflect this change in the link below. This survey is non-binding, and it does not replace the normal enrollment process.
Roosevelt Sponsored Events
Great Hearts Roosevelt has already sponsored local community events to help raise awareness new families in the West Valley about our new location so they can access the same transformative education we have in our academy. So far, we have sponsored two movie in the park nights and the Buckeye Dog Days events. Please see the list of upcoming events below:

Student Tardies & Detentions
We are striving every day to help our students learn the importance of timeliness and responsibility. Instruction begins daily at 7:50am and we ask for your partnership in helping students be at school daily, on time and ready to learn. Beginning in Quarter 2, a student will be expected to serve detention if a student is tardy 5 or more times. Students will serve detention at 7am in the MPR on Thursday mornings. Subsequent tardies will result in additional detentions.
Please read below to see what the 2021-2022 Family Handbook (page 28) states regarding excessive student tardies:
TARDINESS
Students who arrive after the beginning of school must report directly to the school office for a late pass in order to be admitted to class. If a student will be late, the parent/guardian must sign the student in at the school office on arrival.
Following the distinction between excused and unexcused absences described above, ACA makes a distinction between cases of excused tardiness (e.g., due to a doctor’s appointment, illness, or other family business) and unexcused tardiness (e.g., due to oversleeping, transportation problems, or some other reason). The school disapproves of the accumulation of unexcused tardiness, irrespective of the circumstances.
Persistent tardiness is highly disruptive of instruction and undermines student morale. On the 5th occasion of unexcused tardiness in a quarter, a detention will be issued. For each subsequent unexcused tardy in the quarter, another detention will be issued. Excessive tardiness and/or absences may result in retention.

PSO Read-a-thon is Underway!
Lions, Tigers and Books OH MY! It’s a Jungle out there; let's RUN to the library because Archway Trivium East is reading to survive with our 2021 PSO Sponsored Read-a-thon! This year's Read-a-thon will be held from October 11-October 29. This fun school-wide event encourages every scholar to count and total those reading minutes and collect sponsors; either by flat donation or per minute pledge. See the flyer linked below for more information, including prizes!
Here's How it Works:
• Read October 11-29 and record your minutes on your reading log
• Ask parents, family, friends for sponsor donations (either flat or per minute)
• Calculate total minutes and collect money for donations
• Turn in reading log and all collected cash/checks to the front office Monday, November 1
All read-a-thon sponsor forms and money should be returned to the front office or teacher NO LATER than Wednesday, November 3. Cash and checks payable to ATE PSO are accepted. Read-a-thon funds collected stay 100% at ATE and support all aspects of this great classical education!
