Professional Cooperative Placement & Practicum

IHN's Cooperative Education Placements (called Practicums at the Vancouver campus) are an exciting aspect of the program. Vancouver campus Academic Advisor and Communications Coordinator, Jennifer Casey (pictured above), recently presented options to November 2021 graduating students via Zoom. Creating partnerships was an incremental process. 25 years ago, internships and externships for a newly launched private career college, in something as alternative as holistic nutrition, took time to be established. Over the last 14 years, and particularly so over the last 5—minus the yielding of things in 2020—we have tripled our partners. We are proud of the quantity, frequency, diversity, and quality of IHN's professional field placements.

Since September 2019, graduating students have a required minimum of 140 hours. Most do well beyond that, with two or three significant experiences. This has made contract work and employment offers the new normal! The program allows students to build confidence and become familiar stepping into the natural health field. The placement occurs in the final semester of the program, once students have been armed with the foundational knowledge taught in the program.

Students are offered settings where they have a keen interest, shadowing industry professionals and working in small business or large organizations where they learn from—and support—experts in the field. Settings include, but are not limited to, naturopathic clinics, nutrition consulting clinics, holistic dermatology, homeopathy, herbal medicine, fitness centres, therapeutic spas, education, public speaking, writing, health food stores/supplement dispensaries, product + food research and development, natural health product sales, promotion and marketing, organic farms and international retreats. IHN's Student Clinic is a popular Co-op experience.

Jennifer Casey is a 2017 Honours graduate from the Vancouver campus and has been working at IHN for just over a year. Two days a week, she is on campus to handle all of the Vancouver student scheduling and academic needs. Jennifer is engaged with all four campuses, and both the Eastern and Pacific online programs, as the point person in opening clinical and consulting work experiences. When not at IHN, she runs her own Women's Wellness practice, Bite Club Nutrition. She turned her passion for holistic health and wellness into a skincare brand for babies too! It's called Dimpleskins Naturals. She is a fiery advocate and influencer of holistic health for her husband, two teenagers and brand new puppy.

Benefiting The Mind, Body & Soul

“If you take care of your garden, it will take care of you,” expressed Voltaire, the 18th-century French writer and philosopher. Researchers today still attest to the benefits of gardening – it strengthens immunity, is a form of physical exercise, improves mood, and promotes relaxation. You don’t need access to a large backyard, a garden can grow on a windowsill, balcony, or even vertically on the wall. In this May 1, 2019 Impact Magazine article (3 minute read), “Why Gardening Is Good For Your Health,” Harriet Gross explains that anyone can reap the benefits from cultivating a garden.

Kombucha is a fermented, lightly effervescent, sweetened black or green tea beverage. It’s made by adding specific strains of bacteria, yeast and sugar to tea, then allowing it to ferment for a week or more. Kombucha originated in Northeast China around 220 B.C. and was valued for its healing properties. It has similar health benefits to tea, but with the added bonus of beneficial probiotics. Probiotics provide your gut with healthy bacteria, which can improve many aspects of health, including digestion, inflammation, and immunity. Get creative in the kitchen and try this Homebrewed Kombucha recipe by IHN graduate Sarah Britton.
