As stewards of the public's trust, Michigan's 15 public universities are bringing their full slate of resources to bear in combatting the COVID-19 pandemic, marshaling medical and health care assets, research, facilities, protective gear and equipment, and a vast range of expertise spanning the disciplines. Outreach and collaboration are central themes in the universities' efforts to address this public health crisis.
 
Each week, we will share a sample of new programs and actions the state universities are taking in their efforts to respond to the coronavirus pandemic and that demonstrate the vital missions of Michigan's public universities.
Central Michigan University
Two Central Michigan University faculty members are beginning research to see if the emergence of the coronavirus in Wuhan, China, can be traced to fish sold in the city's open markets. They hope to be better able to track the current coronavirus as well as prevent future pandemics.

Eastern Michigan University
Eastern Michigan University has mobilized its resources and deep commitment to community engagement during the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in a wide variety of efforts to assist people and organizations in need. Initiatives by students, faculty, staff and alumni include medical assistance, making and delivering supplies, cash donations, and even help with the laundry.

Ferris State University
Ferris State University is helping meet personal protective equipment shortages for healthcare workers throughout Michigan. Brian Pacholka, laboratory facilities coordinator at Ferris, created a 1,000-pound mold base that will help to produce an "infinite amount" of plastic face shields for those on the front lines.

Grand Valley State University
An accelerated degree program will soon offer Grand Valley State University students the opportunity to fill high-demand roles in a post-COVID-19 economy, including applied data analytics and project management.

Lake Superior State University
Lake Superior State University will start its fall semester early and hold in-person classes, the school announced Thursday. Instead of starting classes on Aug. 24, classes will now start Aug. 10 and the fall semester will wrap up before Thanksgiving.

Michigan State University
As the shortage of critical medical supplies hampers the fight against COVID-19, Michigan State University mechanical engineers have built a ventilator prototype using parts commonly available around the world.

Michigan Technological University
The head of Michigan Technological University's Health Research Institute is closely watching one of the contenders in the race to develop a vaccine against the novel coronavirus. Caryn Hedt, who is also the James and Lorna Mack Chair in Bioengineering, is researching vaccine purification techniques and says a new technique being testerd by biotech firm Modern holds a lot of promise.

Northern Michigan University
In Michigan's Upper Peninsula, soldiers are delivering supplies to the different county seats for distribution to those in need. A recent graduate of Northern Michigan University, Adam Szabo is one of the six soldiers making the supply runs from a distribution hub in Ontonagon County to where they are needed around the UP.

Oakland University School of Health Sciences Professor Jennifer Lucarelli has spearheaded efforts to create a collaborative emergency food system in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Saginaw Valley State University
Your flush may save someone's life, thanks to research that Dr. Tami Sivy and her SVSU chemistry students are conducting. They have formed partnerships with wastewater trea tment plants up and down Saginaw Bay, collecting samples and turning wastewater into data for coronavirus testing.

University of Michigan
A face shield design shared recently by Michigan Medicine and the U-M College of Engineering sets a standard of quality for 3D printing of this kind of protective gear for health care workers. Doctors and engineers identified the need for face shield specifications through the COVID-19 Rapid Reaction Steering Committee, a joint effort between U-M's engineering and medical schools created in late March to address emerging problems.

Wayne State University
Washing hands sounds easy - but not if you are homeless, or are providing meals to the needy. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Street Medicine Detroit, a Wayne State University School of Medicine student-led organization committed to serving the unreached homeless population of Detroit, has built a series of field handwashing stations and placed them near soup kitchens and in homeless encampments throughout the city.

Western Michigan University
Second Lt. Hunter Davidson, an alum of Western Michigan University, and his team from the 1433rd Engineer Company have been working since March at the Feeding America West Michigan Food Bank in Comstock Park. They pack emergency boxes full of food for smaller food pantries to distribute to Grand Rapids-area families.
