Caryn Hedt, who is also the James and Lorna Mack Chair in Bioengineering, is researching vaccine purification techniques and says a new technique being testerd by biotech firm Modern holds a lot of promise.

A face shield design shared recently by Michigan Medicine and the U-M College of Engineering sets a standard of quality for 3D printing of this kind of protective gear for health care workers. Doctors and engineers identified the need for face shield specifications through the COVID-19 Rapid Reaction Steering Committee, a joint effort between U-M's engineering and medical schools created in late March to address emerging problems.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Street Medicine Detroit, a Wayne State University School of Medicine student-led organization committed to serving the unreached homeless population of Detroit, has built a series of field handwashing stations and placed them near soup kitchens and in homeless encampments throughout the city.

Hunter Davidson, an alum of Western Michigan University, and his team from the 1433rd Engineer Company have been working since March at the Feeding America West Michigan Food Bank in Comstock Park.
