Dog or rug? What we see isn't always what we see.

A few years ago, I needed a new area rug. My husband and I went to the store and we decided on this rug because it “spoke to us”. The rug was delivered and then the dog promptly sat down on the rug and we instantly realized why we had such a warm feeling about that one rug when we saw it in the store.

When this happens in human resources and hiring, we call it the “halo effect” (Halo Effect: Definition and Examples | Simply Psychology). The halo effect is when our perception of something is unconsciously influenced by our feelings of someone or something else. Fortunately, this halo effect led to an excellent rug purchase. However, many times, it can lead companies to homogeneous workplaces that don’t create diversity of people and thought.
