The Interim Priest-in-Charge's Last Sunday with Us, 28 June 2020.

Father Norman MacLeod preached his last sermon for us and celebrated his last eucharist with us by Zoom on Sunday.  After worship, his very eventful time at Trinity was honored with song, stories, blessings, and congratulations to him and to his spouse, Elizabeth, as they depart Connecticut and begin their life in full retirement in Rhode Island.

Father Norman has seen Trinity Church through a time of transition marked not just by the expected need to find a new rector and get the church ready to receive that person, but, most unexpectedly, by a global pandemic that has required a complete re-thinking of every aspect of church life and ministry.  And then, in the midst of that, came a national, local, and even world-wide awakening around issues of racism and police brutality.  In all this Norman has led us with a prophetic voice, a pastor's heart, and a graceful, calm, generous, and caring spirit.  Many members of Trinity took the opportunity to thank him personally for his ministry among us.  And the church has chosen to honor him with gifts to Foodshare.

As the Vestry wrote to the congregation on June 15:

"Although we cannot gather in person to present a farewell gift, we invite you to take this opportunity to demonstrate how much Father Norman has meant to all of us.  Please consider making a contribution to Foodshare in his honor, to acknowledge the first of steadfast service, love, and sacramental presence that Fr. Norman has given Trinity Church through  our time together.

July 12 after Morning Prayer

We've heard several challenging sermons about racism since the murder of George Floyd. But, because we're physically separated, we haven't had much chance to talk to each other about how these painful events are affecting us.   

On Sunday, July 12, there will be a Sunday Forum following our Zoom worship. It won't be a presentation by any individual. Instead, it will be a chance to talk to each other about our own experiences of racism and how we're dealing with this heightened awareness of our racist society.  No advice, no discussion - just people sharing their experiences and feelings, while our brothers and sisters in this community listen.

Outreach Team quarterly meeting - All are invited to the zoom meeting on Tuesday, July 14 at 7pm - we will be discussing current outreach activities and considering new outreach activities which can include supporting actions through people power and financial assistance.  Outreach is one of the ways the people of Trinity are the hands of Jesus in our local and world neighborhood.  If you are interested in what Trinity is doing for outreach and or have ideas of how to expand outreach please join us for this meeting.  A Zoom link will be sent to all on Tuesday July 14th. 8 AM In-Person Spoken Morning Prayer

In the next step of our phased re-gathering of the congregation at the Campus of Trinity Church, in-person worship will begin again, weather permitting, on Sunday, July 19th, at 8 AM in the Memorial Garden, and continuing the following Sunday, July 26th, for a Farewell to our Minister of Music, Jack Merrill, in person at 8 AM, and by Zoom from the Holtkamp Organ in the gallery at Trinity Church.

Social distancing will be practiced in the Garden.  Masks will be required of all participants.  If you cannot or will not wear a face covering for the duration of the service, you are welcome as always to join our Zoom service on-line at 10 AM.  Children too young to wear masks should stay home.  The Nursery will not be available.  The restrooms off the Narthex will be open, but the rest of the building will remain off-limits. All participants are asked to enter through the Garden Gate on Sigourney St., just north of the Bell Tower.  In the event of rain, the in-person services will be cancelled.  Zoom services will continue.  Any cancellation will be announced through email and posted on the church website.

Following the guidance of our CT government and bishops, and the best available guidance from the CDC and from national church music organizations, there will be no singing.  Morning Prayer is, of course, a non-eucharistic service.  There will be no passing of the peace, or personal greetings before or after the service.  People who do not live together will be seated at least six feet apart.

These restrictions are put in place to keep everyone as safe as possible.  Many have expressed a deep desire to gather with friends in this sacred place, even under these conditions.  Others have expressed an unwillingness to return to in-person worship even with these precautions.

Our process of regathering continues.  It is our hope as summer turns to fall, as a new rector eventually joins us, and, God willing, as the number of cases of Covid-19 continue to decline, to be able to hold weekly services in the Nave, with live-streaming and Zoom options available to those who need or prefer them.  But we'll begin next month with this small yet momentous step.

Please keep the date and time in mind.  Whether you plan to join us in person or not, the congregation and its worship leaders ask your prayers and support.  And we thank you for your patience, your kindness, and your faithfulness in these unprecedented times.

Trinity Academy 

 

Each morning, Trinity starts its school day with the 40 bright and happy faces of our amazing students, either in person or virtually. They are the faces of hope and promise. Our mission is to help change the cycle of inner city poverty through intensive academics, enrichment, nurture, and empowerment. We share this mission with our local affiliated NativityMiguel middle schools, Grace Academy and Covenant Preparatory School. Together we work to ensure these values for our students and alums. So far, we have shown great success.

With the overwhelming majority of our students identifying as Black, the past month has caused all of us to question how ready our world is to allow our stars to go off into it and flourish. We have always seen our students going forward into a promising future, but understand that there continue to be systemic restrictions and biases. May this time of upheaval be a wake-up call to these devastating truths, and allow for real change to happen.

As Trinity Academy approaches its seventh year as an elementary school, we hold true to our mission and continue to educate our students in ways that will empower them, not silence them. Please help us continue to make the future that much brighter and promising for our students, and keep the positive momentum going in support of the BlackLivesMatter movement. Together, true change happens!

We will use a cool approach created by folks at Yale specifically for parishes, and requiring no previous academic study. You can check it out at www.yalebiblestudy.org . (Please do! It's pretty interesting.) Each meeting starts with a conversational introduction to the subject from two faculty members, then offers discussion questions, and options for further reading. I find the curriculum both accessible and flexible. We can do as much or as little as we like with each session. It's up to us to use it in a way that works for us.
