COLLEGE NEWS
I’m sure you can think of those in your life who have inspired you to action – whether to participate in a walk to raise money or awareness, or to volunteer for a worthy cause. By your own actions in these cases, you are setting an example and “walking the walk” - not merely “talking the talk”! It is no accident that one of our five college values is “Inspire Impact.” Inspiring impact is an outcome of effective leadership; not just telling others what to think or do, but rather, demonstrating commitment through your own behavior and actions. Vision and passion play a role, but people must believe in your integrity and see it in your words and actions. As you read this, I suspect a person comes readily to mind as an example of “inspiring impact.” I encourage you to let them know what a positive difference they have had on you!

Warm regards, Kathy

THANK YOU!
We plan, design and enjoy buildings, but there is an entire, and often unseen, group of people working to care for them. This morning I’d like to give a particular “shout out” to our custodial staff in Architecture Hall. Brenda and the remainder of those who take care of our building so well, take special pride in their work, and we are the beneficiaries. Not only do we have a clean and well-kept building to operate within, but we also have a safe building, as they pay special attention to surfaces. The next time you see one of our custodians, please thank them for their work!
ARCHITECTURE
This week I am excited to highlight the Architecture Program’s second-year student experience. This fall, we welcome seventy-three second-year students into the Architecture Program, the second-highest enrollments in recent years. As some of you may recall, incoming architecture students enroll in core foundational courses during the fall semester such as Modern History, Architecture Design Studio and Structural Fundamentals. These courses set the stage for future investigations and critical thinking about style, volume, structure and the built environment. To gain further insight into their experience, I have asked second-year faculty and students to reflect on the courses and their experiences. More-
INTERIOR DESIGN
This particular week, my message is primarily directed to our third and fourth-year students in the Interior Design Program.

We have a fun and formative event for our third and fourth-year interior design students to put on their calendars. On Friday, October 1, from 11:30-12:15 pm, we will host an Interior Design Professional Internship Student Panel that will be followed by a 12:15-1 pm Lunch on the Lawn.

As you may or may not know, the Interior Design Program has a purposeful professional development sequence in our curriculum. This includes a spring IDES 318-Professional Practice that provides third year students an overview of legal, business and ethical procedures and practices of interior design; but also prepares students for internships and jobs by covering interview and communication skills, portfolio and resume building and defining students’ professional goals. PROFESSIONAL ETIQUETTE TIPS
What does RSVP mean, and what is expected of me if something indicates “RSVP”? RSVP is an acronym with French beginnings and what it basically means is that the issuer of the invitation would like you to respond. They are asking you to let them know if you will be attending or not. If the invitation includes guests, then when you RSVP, you should indicate the number of guests who will accompany you.
It is just as important to let the inviter know you will be attending as it is to let them know you will not attend. Don’t leave them hanging, respond as soon as possible, even though there will often be an “RSVP by” date on the invitation.
