Lecture Series at Garland Landmark Museum: Travels in History

The Garland Landmark Museum at Heritage Crossing continues its newest lecture series: Travels in History.

This month's lecture, Pretty Reckless: Tales of the Unconventional Women of East Texas, will take place at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, at the museum, 393 N. Sixth St.

The event is free for Landmark Society Members and $10 for non-members. You can join the Landmark Society at the door for $20 for free admission. Wine and coffee will be served.

Fourth Annual Garland Guzzler 0.5K Race Saturday, Sept. 25

Race around the historic Downtown Square at the City's annual Garland Guzzler 0.5K Race on Saturday, Sept. 25!

This physically demanding 😉 and mentally strenuous 😉 race known as The Garland Guzzler 0.5K will be taking place, live and in-person, for its fourth year!

After you finish the race, stay for the Oktoberfest-themed party with live music, Oktoberfest games and, of course, food and drinks.

Garland Brings Home State Awards
The City of Garland is continuing its award-winning tradition at state conferences. This year the Public & Media Relations Department and Visit Garland, the City’s Convention & Visitors Bureau, each earned several state awards. The two departments collaborated on several of the award-winning projects.

Garland earned seven awards at the Texas Association of Convention and Visitor Bureaus Annual Conference. The City earned another seven awards at the 2021 Texas Association of Municipal Information Officers Annual Conference.

Neighborhood Vitality Matching Grant
Applications Due Thursday, Sept. 23
The Application deadline for the Neighborhood Vitality Matching Grant program is Thursday, Sept. 23.

Neighborhood groups registered with the Office of Neighborhood Vitality may apply for up to $100,000 in matching funds for neighborhood enhancement projects on public property. Additional assistance is available for voluntary neighborhood groups.

COVID-19 Vaccines, Boosters Available at Garland's Public Health Clinic

You can get the COVID-19 vaccine without an appointment at our Public Health Clinic, 206 Carver Drive, between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Garland Health Department is now providing boosters for the COVID-19 vaccine to those the declared eligible by the Centers for Disease Control. Those considered moderately to severely immunocompromised are eligible to receive a third dose of Pfizer or Moderna. A third dose registration form and eligibility information are available at GarlandTX.gov.

Flu Shots Now Available at Garland's Public Health Clinic

The Garland Public Health Clinic, 206 Carver Drive, has received its first shipment of vaccine for the 2021-22 flu season.

Flu shots are available from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays for adults, children and seniors who are insured. Low-cost flu vaccines for uninsured children and adults are also now available.

City Council Meetings
Sept. 13 and 14
The Garland City Council Work Session will begin at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13, and will include the final public hearing on the FY 2021-22 Proposed Budget. Regular Meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, and will include the final public hearing on the proposed tax rate for the 2021-22 fiscal year. Council is scheduled to adopt the budget at the Sept. 14 Regular Meeting. The proposed budget is available at GarlandTX.gov. Both meetings will take place at City Hall, 200 N. Fifth St.

Plan Commission
Sept. 15
The Garland Plan Commission will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, at City Hall, 200 N. Fifth St.

Cultural Arts Commission Grant Applications
Sept. 17
Applications for the Garland Cultural Arts Commission's 2021-22 Grant Program may be picked up at the Granville Arts Center Box Office, 300 N. Fifth St., between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Applications are due to the Granville Arts Center Friday, Sept. 17. Follow-up interviews will take place Thursday, Sept. 23, at the Granville Arts Center. For more information, call 972-205-2780.

Rain Barrel Sale

The City of Garland Water Utilities Department is offering an opportunity to purchase rain barrels at a discounted price. Through a cooperative purchase, the classic black, 50-gallon Ivy Rain Barrel is being offered for $78 each (normal retail price is $129). COVID-19 Updates
As of Thursday, Sept. 9, the Garland Health Department has received reports of 2,497 active cases out of 35,858 confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Garland residents since the beginning of the pandemic, as well as 492 deaths. The City updates its posted case numbers each Monday and Thursday.

The City of Garland and its community partners are facilitating access to recovery programs for Garland residents who have been impacted by COVID-19. Assistance is available for a variety of services, including financial assistance for housing, utilities, food and medical expenses, as well as workforce training and job placement services, and counseling and emergency shelter assistance.
