Water-Wise Tips
In the Kitchen and Laundry:
  • Use your washing machine and dishwasher only for full loads.
  • Install a water-efficient clothes washer to save up to 16 gallons of water per load.
  • Check faucets and pipes for leaks.
  • Replace older appliances with new, water-efficient models.
  • Let your pots and pans soak instead of letting water run while you clean them.
  • Use garbage disposals less often.
  • Do not let the faucet run while cleaning vegetables.
Understanding Higher Water Usage in a COVID-19 World
Staying at home might mean using more water for food preparation, dish washing, laundry, car washing, gardening, showering, toilet flushing, and more. A dishwasher can use 30-35 gallons of water per cycle, minimize your water usage by only starting a full load. If you wash dishes by hand, don’t leave the water running. If you have two sinks, fill one with rinse water and utilize a spray device for short blasts. This could save 200 to 500 gallons a month. Check for leaks around your home, a slow leak in your toilet can waste 30 gallons a day while a medium or large leak can waste between 200 and 300 gallons per day.
