Lake Nona Middle School

Like many schools across the country, LNMS is currently engaged in distance learning. This week we continue forward with week #7.

Last week we remembered our teachers who continue to showcase immense dedication to our school and to our scholars. Their work is incredible and in this issue you will find a few images that capture some of our Teacher Appreciation Week highlights. For example, LNMS honored our teachers with a Grab-and-Go bag with many goodies such as a portable power bank, free pizza coupons and a box lunch from Chick-fil-A (pictured very top). A big thanks to PTSA, Lake Nona Volleyball, Lake Nona Soccer and LNMS administrators for coordinating the surprise! Several of our teachers also received letters from graduating high school seniors expressing gratitude that they were their teachers: Mr. Contreras, Mr. Johnson, Ms. Nieves, Mrs. Connelly, and Mrs. Jennings. The LNMS Student Government Association and National Junior Honor Society also put together a PowerPoint with teacher appreciation slides.

In total, this year's Teacher Appreciation Week turned out very well under the circumstances. We are so fortunate to have such caring students, families and community members!

Please note that our hours of operation starting this week are Monday - Friday from 9am - 2pm by appointment only. Staff will continue to work from home when not at their work sites and can be reached by email.

Finally, to all of our Lake Nona moms, a Happy Mother's Day. You deserve all the credit in the world for what you do!

With Knight Pride,

Stephanie R. Jackson, M. Ed.
Principal

OPD Officer Tim O'Day

Recognizing Orlando Police Dept. School Resource Officer Tim O-Day as this week is National Police Week in the USA.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. This week honors those law enforcement officers that serve and those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

OCPS Top Talent 2020!

The Foundation for OCPS is proud to say the show must go on: Top Talent 2020 is going VIRTUAL May 15, 2020! With so much being cancelled due to COVID-19, we are doing everything in our power to keep this event alive so that we can all celebrate our students' amazing gifts!

Please click image to see all contestants!

But a virtual event will only work if we have an audience watching, participating, and cheering on the kids. Students from 20 schools are finalists for this year's event, and proceeds benefit arts programs throughout the district.

The show will be broadcast on the district's YouTube channel. Proceeds benefit the Foundation and provide arts enrichment for students experiencing poverty or homelessness. Winning students AND their schools receive cash prizes - over $5,000 will be given away.

Normally, in addition to raising event sponsorships, tickets are sold to help us raise funds. Our sponsors have been very supportive of the pivot to a virtual event, but ticket sales are not an option this year.

Instead, we must strongly promote our "Fan Favorite" Text2Give voting option. T here are two categories, one each for the performing and visual arts. One vote is one dollar; there is no limit on the number of times a person can vote. The Fan Favorite winner(s) will be those with the most votes as of 7:50 p.m. the night of the show, and will be identified at the end of the Top Talent show's broadcast.

There is one week left for families, friends, and other community members to vote. We are providing daily Fan Favorite tallies on the Foundation's Facebook page to keep the competition lively.

*** Vote for your Fan Favorite by texting FFSTAGE to 41444 for your favorite performer or FFVISUAL to 41444 for your favorite artist. You can vote early and often - don't wait, and please share!

Student Assignment Expectation - Weekly Attendance Quiz
(Very important)
All teachers will post an assignment on Monday detailing their expectations or outline for the week. Students are to acknowledge they understand the expectations by answering a one question assignment quiz for each class; this will serve as your attendance check-in. The answer is due by noon Friday of that week. Students will be marked absent if the weekly attendance quiz is not completed.

Knight Teacher Office Hours
Students and parents may need to get additional support or clarification on an assignment. LNMS teachers will be available during these posted office hours.

Knight Digital Learning Schedule
The following schedule allows LNMS to provide dedicated time to each content area. Some teachers may choose to interact with live teaching sessions and live help support during the window of time. Students can follow this schedule in order to ensure a class is not missed throughout the week.
