Good morning, awesome SCS teachers and staff.

Welcome back to the best school year ever! Over the last several months, life as we know it has changed. We wear masks and keep distance from one another to protect against a viral enemy that has robbed our community and others around the world of mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, neighbors and friends. However, my faith, commitment and dedication to SCS have never been stronger. In the face of the pandemic, it is time to lead through the moment and speak life into this otherwise bleak time.

As I continue to reflect on the last six months, I want to personally thank each of you for your patience and grace. You helped your students bring closure to an interrupted school year, you reached out to your community in service and you reached out to me and other administrators with compassion. Neither I nor our community will ever forget your gifts of grace. You have also embraced the new virtual landscape we find ourselves in and worked to get ready for the new journey of educating our students online.

Over the last few weeks - thanks to you - our students and families came out in record-breaking numbers during device deployment. So many of them commented that it was the communication from their child’s school that helped them know what to expect with the process of picking up devices and getting online. I applaud you for keeping the communication lines open and current for our families.

This school year, we will navigate unexplored territory, and your leadership will guide us through. As leaders for your schools and your students, you have everything you need: the intelligence to see an issue and fix it, the heart to stay motivated and the courage to not give up. As Alice Walker put it - we are the ones we've been waiting for.

I say it every week because it's true: Coronavirus will not defeat us! We are STRONGER together! We are 901!

With thanks for all you do for students and families,
Sincerely,

Dr. Joris M. Ray,
Superintendent
