The countdown has begun! Join us for the YouTube Premiere of the much-anticipated film featuring Dr. Drew Harvell, as she guides our host on a "biodiversity treasure hunt" at False Bay Biological Preserve when the tide is out. (If you don't know already, you'll see why this bay is called "False.")

Dr. Harvell, along with award-winning filmmaker Michael Noonan, will be on hand to field questions and add comments during the LIVE premiere on September 9 at 7:30pm.

$5.2 MILLION DONATION EXPANDS TURTLEBACK PRESERVE, RETURNS LAND TO LUMMI NATION
On July 31, the San Juan Preservation Trust and San Juan County Land Bank announced the acquisition and permanent conservation of a 36-acre addition to the Turtleback Mountain Preserve on Orcas Island. Concurrently, an adjacent six-acre parcel was returned to the Lummi Nation. Purchase of all 42+/- acres (total) was prompted by the vision and generosity of Malcolm Goodfellow, whose $5.2 million gift is thought to be the largest charitable cash donation in San Juan County history.
A STUMP BECOMES A GARDEN CENTERPIECE
EYESORE TO OASIS
Summer interns Georgia Drost and Emma Jacobs made the most of their two-week quarantine after they arrived on the Ellis Preserve in mid-July. With pandemic precautions in place, Preserve Curator Ruthie Dougherty guided the interns through a dual work project: plant a pollinator garden around an old stump AND make a short video to document the transformation.
NEW NESTERS AT THE ELLIS PRESERVE
IF YOU BUILD IT ...
In May we mounted Purple Martin nest boxes built by volunteer Joshua Johns on the dock house at the Marilyn and Fred Ellis Preserve (see story about this learn-at-home project).

It seemed a stretch to expect the Martins to discover and establish a new nest site this season, yet to our surprise and delight, they did! By mid-July a beautiful pair were at work preparing and earnestly defending their nest.
LEAVE YOUR LEGACY IN THE SAN JUAN ISLANDS
The Gann Society is a group of individuals who have notified us that they have provided for the San Juan Preservation Trust in their estate plans.

Protect these islands for generations to come with a bequest to the San Juan Preservation Trust.

LIVESTOCK AT RED MILL FARM | STAFF ARCHIVE
The livin' looks easy on this late-summer day at Red Mill Farm. Thom Pence, SJPT's caretaker at Red Mill, snapped these bovine beauties with a background view of the lush farmland of San Juan Valley. Much of it is protected in perpetuity for agricultural use, thanks to your support for island conservation.
