Tinker Field Research Grants Available

The Tinker Foundation has awarded a Field Research grant to  the Center for Latin American Studies, which will be used to provide graduate students with funds for travel to and within Latin America to conduct pre-dissertation research.
 
This award, combined with matching funds from the Office of International Affairs, will provide $20,000 in 2018 to graduate and professional students seeking to travel in Latin America for master's thesis and doctoral research. Grant funding is renewable for a three-year period. Up to $3,000 per student may be awarded.
   
The application is available on the Center for Latin American Studies website with a deadline to apply by March 15, 2018.

Call for Proposals: 2018 Symposium on Indigenous Languages and Cultures
The second Symposium on Indigenous Languages and Cultures of Latin America (ILCLA), organized in conjunction with the fourth Symposium on Teaching and Learning Indigenous Languages of Latin America (STLILLA 2018) brings together instructors, practitioners, activists, indigenous leaders, scholars and learners who study indigenous languages and cultures of Latin America and the Caribbean. 

ILCLA/STLILLA will take place October 25-28, 2018 at Ohio State. Proposals are now being accepted for individual presentations and group panels related to one of eight thematic tracks. Lecture: Dr. Gilbert Joseph
The Center for Latin American Studies and the Department of History are pleased to announce that on March 23rd, from 3:00 - 4:30 pm, Dr. Gilbert Joseph will be presenting a talk on "The Once and Future Revolution: Social Upheaval and the Challenge of Rule during Mexico's Long Twentieth Century" at 165 Thompson Library. Haitian Psychiatry Lecture

As part of the "Innovative Interdisciplinary Directions in Francophone, French, and Italian Studies" lecture series, Dr. Deborah Jenson from Duke University will be presenting a talk on "Firmin's Area: From the 19th Century Critique of the 'Epistemic' Brain to the 20th Century Birth of Haitian Ethnological Psychiatry and Beyond." 

This lecture will take place on Friday, March 2nd from 4:00 - 5:30 pm in 180 Hagerty Hall. All are welcome!
University Engagement Recognition Awards
The Office of International Affairs is offering two awards as part of the upcoming University Engagement Recognition Awards. Ohio State faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to apply for the Distinguished International Engagement Award ($3,000) and the Emerging International Engagement Award ($1,000). Applications are due February 28th and more information about the application process can be found here.

Collaborative Research Project: Latinx Placemaking in the Midwest
Professors and graduate students from across the Midwest are taking part in the collaborative research project,  "Building Sustainable Worlds: Latinx Placemaking in the Midwest." This project is funded by a major grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation/Humanities Without Walls consortium. This project examines the significance of Latinx efforts in building sustainable communities in both urban and small-town environments of the region as these appear in formal and everyday performance; literature; and community, cultural, and arts centers. University of New Mexico Latin American and Iberian Instiutte: Richard E. Greenleaf Visiting Library Scholar travel award
The University of New Mexico Latin American and Iberian Institute (LAII) and the University Libraries are pleased to invite applications for the Richard E. Greenleaf Visiting Library Scholar travel award. The deadline for applications is Friday, March 31, 2017 at 5:00 pm (MT).

Mershon Center Scholarships and Research Grants
Each year, the Mershon Center for International Security Studies holds a competition for Ohio State faculty and students to apply for research grants and scholarship funds. The deadline for all applications is 5 p.m. on  Wednesday, February 28, 2018 .

Applications for Faculty Research and Seed Grants and Graduate Student Research Grants must be for projects related to the study of national security in a global context.  In recent years the center has funded several dozen faculty and graduate student research projects with grants for travel, seminars, conferences, interviews, experiments, surveys, library costs, and more.

The Mershon Center has also established International Security Scholarships for Undergraduate Theses and Study Abroad to support undergraduates whose professional career plans lie in the field of international security and who would benefit doing research for an undergraduate thesis or studying in a foreign country.
