A Message from Pastor Scott |
|
There is a connection between mouth and heart. Sometimes we say all of the right things, but our hearts are not right, and people can easily see through our words to the insincerity or judgement that lies behind those words. Other times we may use judgmental words and justify them by our righteous cause.
Bob Goff, in Everybody, Always, wrote, “I’ve concluded we can be correct and not right…I do this most often when I have the right words and the wrong heart.” Have you ever had the right words and the wrong heart? I have been guilty of this more often that I want to admit!
The Bible warns us about how we use our words. Proverbs 12:8 says: “The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.”
Our world is full of reckless words. I hear and see these words on the air - on TV, in print, and on social media. They are reckless words coming from all over the political spectrum that are thrown about with reckless abandon and often pierce like a sword. We may not be saying and writing these words, but are we listening to them and giving them our attention? When I tune in to these reckless voices, I find that I am affected by them and am more likely to repeat some of their recklessness.
I think that it is time that we stop giving these reckless voices our attention. Let us not let them influence us any longer. One of the ways for our hearts to be right is for us to be tuned in to the One who gives the words of life, hope, meaning, and love. So let us stop listening to those reckless voices and take in the wisdom of the word of God, so that it can do its good work within us.

Congregation Communications Team |
|
Session has designated three elders - Nancy Johns, Ben Stimmel, and Bo Liebe - as the Congregational Communications Team. Our purpose is to communicate to the congregation on a regular basis about the process CPC is moving through to call a new pastor and answer any questions you might have. We will be updating the congregation on the progress of these activities on a regular basis through the Columbia Weekly, the website FAQ postings, in person, and individually as you contact us. For us, email is preferred just because it lets us share our correspondence.
These are exciting times! We want everyone to be comfortable that there is a process and where we are in it.

Plan to come to this dynamic weekend of learning, listening, and growing with our speaker Steve Argue from Fuller Seminary and Fuller Youth Institute. Steve brings a passion for teaching and mentoring students, researching and learning about youth culture, training leaders, inspiring parents, and cultivating the church's imagination about how to reach a younger generation for Christ.

How can you “Be the Bridge” of reconciliation in your community? This is an important question for us to ask as we face a world that is full of division. Ben Stimmel and Bernard Veljacic will host the “Be the Bridge” class, where we will talk about the biblical mandate for us to join with Christ in the ministry of racial reconciliation.

GIFT Women's Bible Study

The mission of GIFT is to help women of all ages grow in faith together through friendship and discipleship. You are invited to join this group of women who not only study the Bible, but support and encourage each other in our lives and faith. In our fall study, “Jesus and Women: In the First Century and Now” by Kristi McLelland, we will discover the Bible through the lens of Middle Eastern culture as we follow in the footsteps of women who came face-to-face with Jesus.

Life Together Adult Class
Wednesdays, 6:00PM-7:30PM, Chapel
Begins Sept. 15
How can we grow closer to God and become more like Jesus? The Bible indicates that this is always done in a community of disciples. On Wednesday evenings, Pastor Scott will help us explore how we can do “Life Together” in our spiritual disciplines, and how doing them together will help us grow as individuals. This will be a 12-week course on the spiritual disciplines practiced in community. It will also look at some non-traditional disciplines that have been overlooked at times, such as Sabbath keeping and practicing forgiveness, reconciliation and justice.

In this second of six Dunamis Conferences, you will look at what Scripture teaches about how God’s Spirit calls us to cooperate with him, becoming people who change the world for the glory of Jesus Christ. The teaching will be onsite at the Columbia Presbyterian Church. Also included is a hosted, onsite contemplative prayer walk.

A Youth Ministry Newsletter was sent with all the details regarding Middle School and High School Sunday school, youth group, confirmation classes and retreats. That email can be viewed online Here.
Youth Back to School Retreats
Registration is open for both the Middle School and High School Back to School Retreats. Early registration is appreciated and links to register online can be found in the Columbia Weekly or church website. Every youth needs a new Medical Release Form for the 2021-22 school year. Click here for form. Assistance is available to anyone who needs it.
- Middle School BTSR - Saturday, Oct. 2, 10:00AM-3:00PM. Cost is $35.
- High School BTSR - Nov. 5-6. Cost is $100.

Children's Sunday School for Fall 2021
- For now, Sunday school for ages Kindergarten - 5th will be at the 9:00AM service only.
- Sunday school for Preschool will be offered at both the 9:00AM & 10:30AM services.
- Nursery care for 0-2 years will be offered at both the 9:00AM & 10:30AM services.
- Children will begin in the worship service and will be dismissed to Sunday school following the children's message. Children needing nursery care may be checked in at any time.

Compassion Vancouver Clinic

Compassion Vancouver has reflected over the past year on the best way to provide medical/dental clinics in Vancouver and Clark County. They have decided to go from one big clinic a year to several smaller medical/dental clinics. Compassion Vancouver's plan is 2-3 clinics per year, at several different churches. Smaller clinics are easier to plan, require fewer volunteers, and are much less expensive.

Haiti Updates
On Aug. 14, a devastating 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit southwestern Haiti, leaving over 2,200 people dead, and many more injured, missing, and homeless. Days later, Tropical Storm Grace swept over the ravaged landscape, hampering the complicated search and rescue mission. According to some estimates, 40% of the total affected population are in need of emergency humanitarian assistance, and more than half a million children were affected.
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) partners with other aid groups to help people in need when disaster strikes anywhere in the world. If you would like to make a financial contribution to the humanitarian crisis in Haiti, Session recommends PDA as a reliable way to offer help. Click Here to donate.

Senegal Child Sponsorship
Several development areas where many of us have sponsored children will pass the evaluation for being independent from World Vision. Two we know of are Diakhao and Niakhar. If your child’s number begins with SEN 174500-xxx or SEN 174501-xxx, these kiddos are in those communities and your ability to sponsor will be terminated shortly.
You will receive a letter from World Vision to this effect and often with a suggested new child. This child does NOT know you have their name and it is a time when you can say NO and make an online request for a child in the community that CPC is focused on next - Lour-Ribot. The process to become a NEW sponsor will work the same. Here is how to find your new child:

- Scroll down past the map to SPONSOR A CHILD, click (Location no longer is available)
- Select GENDER, AGE, BIRTH MONTH, BIRTH DATE
- Children that fit your criteria will appear for LEARN MORE which will include a video and a SPONSOR button.
Sponsorship provides base funding for a community to get the development work done that is needed—water, education, nutrition/health, child protection, livelihood development and Christian witness partnering with community members.
