Inclusive Language across Latin America

CLAS, in collaboration with Union Institute & University's Institute for Social Justice, presents a new series of conversations about inclusive language. This free series will take place on Zoom and consist of 3 panels (all times EDT/EST):

• TOMORROW! Oct. 13, 2-4pm: Spanish
• Nov. 2, 4-6pm: Portuguese
• Nov. 15, 4-6pm: Indigenous Languages (Nahuatl, Quechua, Yucatec Maya)

The series will offer a panorama of inclusive language in these languages in terms of its linguistic manifestation, adoption by speakers, relationship to gender roles and cultural norms, connection to social movements and human rights, etc. Each conversation will be led by a diverse team of panelists with unique expertise and perspectives who will educate and challenge us on these topics.

Día de los Muertos Family Festival

On Saturday, October 16th, at Green Lawn Cemetery (1000 Greenlawn Avenue) the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and Latina/o Studies will be hosting a family festival to celebrate Día de los Muertos.

The event is free and open to the public and will feature food trucks, costume contests, Aztec dance, and calavera poetry workshops and recitals.

National Hispanic Heritage Month Resources

In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, Union Institute and University (Ohio's only Hispanic-Serving Institution) has published online content that explores and celebrates Latina/o/x experiences.

Read Union faculty member Shirley Murillo's reflections on migrant workers, language barriers, and education in "Walk a Mile in My Shoes".

Also tune in to the "Words of Wisdom" podcast to hear Dr. Ciriaco "Cid" Pinedo, President and CEO of The Children's Fund, talk about his work providing social services to vulnerable children.

Abya Yala: La revolución inesperada

The Abya Yala Student Organization hosts the fifth event of its Conversations on a Changing Planet & Latin America series. On Mon., Oct. 18 at 1:30pm, Dr. Federico Helfgott will present a talk entitled "La revolución inesperada: El giro a la izquierda en el Perú".

Under the U.S. Department of Education's Title VI Foreign Language and Area Studies program, CLAS offers summer and academic year fellowships for graduate and undergraduate students who need advanced training in language and area studies.
The next application window for FLAS fellowships will open in early November '21, with a February '22 deadline. Stay tuned!

BRASA 2022: Call for Proposals

The Brazilian Studies Association (BRASA) is now accepting proposals for BRASA 2022, to be held March 9-12 at Georgetown University, with virtual options for participation.

The submission deadline for individual papers or complete panels is November 1, 2021.

Global Engagement Certificate Program

Become a Global Citizen through the Global Engagement Certificate Program!

The Global Engagement Certificate Program is a new opportunity for students to enhance their college experience while becoming global citizens. Students must indicate their desire to pursue the certificate by October 15 by filling out the intent form. Students will be exposed to different cultural perspectives, develop skills and confidence to communicate with others from different cultures, and foster meaningful relationships. Learn more here.

Dissertation research funding available
via Fulbright-Hays

The Office of International Affairs is soliciting applicants for the FY2022 U.S. Department of Education Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) Fellowship competition. This program provides grants to colleges and universities to fund individual doctoral students to engage in full-time dissertation research abroad in modern foreign languages and area studies for periods of 6 to 12 months.
