Keep Alberta Dead Elm Disease Free
Elm Pruning Ban is in effect April 1

The Town of Blackfalds is joining the rest of the province in an effort to keep Dutch Elm Disease out of Alberta. With everyone’s help and education we can keep our elm trees alive and well.

Dutch Elm Disease or DED (Ophiostoma ulmi) is a fungal infection believed to be transmitted by elm bark beetles attracted to the smell of dead and decaying Elm wood. This is an Elm Pruning Ban is in effect starting April 1.

What NOT To Flush Down The Toilet
Your Public Works department would like to remind residents to help the environment and protect your wastewater system by properly disposing of household items. Products that can cause damage to your sewer pipes include:
  • Baby and Lysol wipes
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Dental floss, paper towel
  • Disposable diapers
  • Cooking fats, oils, and grease

By putting these items in the sewer you could cause blockages and damage to your system or the towns system. We appreciate your support!

Don’t use the toilet as a trashcan.
Crack Sealing
Every summer the public works team undertakes the task of crack sealing the roads. You may ask, "What is crack sealing and why is it done"?
Crack sealant is a cold pour rubberized asphalt sealant that stays flexible when applied to an asphalt crack. As the pavement expands and contracts, with the weather conditions, the sealant moves in tandem hopefully keeping the water and debris from infiltrating the crack.
If the cracks where left alone they would expand which will lead to potholes, sinkholes and reduce the overall life of the asphalt surface.

  • Roads being maintained will be signed the day maintenance is to be performed with construction signage as well as "SLOW FRESH OIL" signs at the beginning and end of the streets.
  • If you are able to avoid these areas this will only help speed up the crews progress as well as let the product cure.
  • Flour is applied over the freshly sealed crack to reduce tracking from vehicles and keep the product in place.
  • Be sure to stay a safe distance from crack sealing crew, and slow down when passing workers.

Your patience and cooperation is greatly appreciated!
