U.S. Travel Association Updates

The U.S. Travel Association has submitted to the White House and to the governors of every state a document of health and safety guidance recommendations developed with collaboration with health and medical professionals, and with organizations throughout the broader travel industry: hotels/resorts, airports, airlines, attractions, restaurants, rental cars, meeting venues, event producers, travel advisors and others.

The guidance focuses on six key areas, with suggested approaches outlined under each. Read the full guidance here
  • Travel businesses should adapt operations, modify employee practices and/or redesign public spaces to help protect employees and customers.
  • Travel businesses should consider implementing touchless solutions, where practical, to limit the opportunity for virus transmission while also enabling a positive travel experience.
  • Travel businesses should adopt and implement enhanced sanitation procedures specifically designed to combat the transmission of COVID-19.
  • Travel businesses should promote health screening measures for employees and isolate workers with possible COVID-19 symptoms and provide health resources to customers.
  • Travel businesses should establish a set of procedures aligned with CDC guidance should an employee test positive for COVID-19.
  • Travel businesses should follow best practices in food and beverage service to protect the health of employees and customers.
Washington State Updates

Washington State's 'Safe Start" recovery plan is a 4 phase approach, which has been outlined by Governor Inslee and can be viewed here. Phase 1 began on May 5. Washington's current "Stay Home" order has been extended to May 31. Only essential travel and limited non-essential travel for Phase 1 activities is allowed. Each phase will last a minimum of three weeks.

The Regional Economic Partnership (REP) at the Port of Bellingham has released a report detailing the results of a general survey on the economic impacts of COVID-19 on Whatcom County businesses. The survey was developed by the REP in coordination with Whatcom Unified Command, the Bellingham Regional Chamber of Commerce and Western Washington University's Small Business Development Center.

The economic impact survey received 756 unique responses from local businesses with 48% reporting closures due to COVID-19. Industry sectors reporting the highest number of closures were services, construction, retail, restaurants and bars, recreation, marine and manufacturing.  53% of survey respondents reported laying off workers due to COVID-19, and an additional 26% of businesses are considering layoffs in the near to medium term if the situation does not change.

As Washington State reopened some outdoor recreation on May 5, it is important to understand how to safely utilize our city, county and state lands at this time. Bellingham is home to 3,400 acres of parklands and 80 miles of trails, all of which remain open during Washington's "Stay Home, Stay Healthy" order. Trails operated by Whatcom County Parks Department have also remained open.

Although it is still very important to follow the Governor's orders to Stay Home, we are inspiring happy thoughts of scenic Bellingham and Whatcom County locations with our "BE A Dreamer" bracket throughout the month of May. View images of all the contending locations on our website and follow Bellingham Experience on Facebook and Instagram to vote on your favorites!
