Outrageous Times
There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens - Ecclesiastes 3:1
If, at the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year, you had told me what the end of the school year would look like, I probably would have said something like, "That is too outrageous to even consider - it will never happen."
But God never promised us the outrageous things wouldn't happen. In fact, when we read through His Word we tend to see more outrageous things than not: floods and plagues; talking donkeys and dens of lions; sight returned to the blind and the dead raised to life. It's a common theme in the Bible: God allows, calls forth, and uses the outrageous things.
The hard part is when we are in the middle of the unknown and making the best decisions we can at the moment when we can't see or understand how everything is going to work out. We know, however, the promise that our God makes to us: He will never leave us or forsake us. We have been redeemed by the blood of Christ, and that makes us His children, even during the outrageous times; especially during the outrageous times.
Our God is in control and has promised us that He works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to His promise. (Romans 8:28). That is something we can hold on to during the outrageous times.

Final Grades
Final grades will be mailed to those who have returned all school property and fully paid tuition. The school office is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day until July 2.

Summer Reads 2020
The books for the 2020 Summer Reads have been announced. Students are to read one of the following books available for their grade before the 2020-2021 school year begins.
- Freshmen (Class of 2024): Shift by Jennifer Bradbury or Guts by Gary Paulson *For students taking the course Transitional Reading (or others by permission), choose one of the following: Monster by Walter Dean Myers or The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba
- Sophomores (Class of 2023): The Book Thief by Markus Zusak or The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls
- Juniors (Class of 2022): Warriors Don't Cry by Melba Patillo Beals
- Seniors (Class of 2021): All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr or Friday Night Lights by H. G. Bissinger
There will be no project for the book. In place of the written project, students will take a comprehension test on their book in August. That grade will still be a part of their English grade for 1st quarter. For students who do not have a VLHS English course during the fall, the grade will be incorporated into another class.Be prepared to either present on your book or discuss it. This may happen in family groups, English classes, or in other classes.

SENIORS - FINAL TRANSCRIPTS (IMPORTANT!)
All seniors headed off to college need to request their Final Transcript to be sent to the institution where they will study next year. All final transcripts will be sent via
PARCHMENT
. You can use the
Final Transcript Ordering Guide
to walk you through the process. Be sure to mark them as "HOLD FOR GRADES". Also, you should change the email on your account to a personal email, as you will lose access to your school email account over the summer.
COURSES AND SCHEDULING
Students should make it a habit to check their email regularly over the summer. This is how Mrs. Mueller will be communicating if there are any concerns or issues with course requests or schedules for the 2020-2021 school year. Schedules will be released in August. If you are intending on changing a request, please email Mrs. Mueller ASAP.
PE CREDIT WAIVERS (CLASS OF 2022 & 2023)
All PE Waivers received this school year will appear on a student's report card at the end of the semester. If you do not see one at the end of the year, it means I do not have one on file for you. Students should check Google Classroom for a digital copy they can download and complete. We will take care of a coach's signature while we are learning remotely.
WORK PERMITS
Students under the age of 18 must have a work permit on file to hold a job. Governor Whitmer has lifted some of the detailed requirements in obtaining a work permit, but they are still necessary to hold employment during the school year OR in the summer. Any student who needs a work permit should email Mrs. Mueller directly.
BIG FUTURE COLLEGE & CAREER SEARCH
The CollegeBoard provides a great, free resource for students and their families to navigate the world of careers and colleges. Students can log into their CollegeBoard account, fill out surveys to link them to potential careers and colleges, and save favorite schools to compare and contrast. Check it out as a family at

SAT NATIONAL TEST DATE UPDATES
The June national test date for the SAT has been officially cancelled. Registration for the 2020-21 SAT administrations is now open. June registrants will be able to transfer their seat to a 2020-21 administration. All other students in the high school class of 2021 who don't have SAT scores will also have early access to register for the August, September, and October administrations. This includes students who had registered for March or May and had their registrations canceled and refunded. SAT is offering national exams every month from August to December 2020.
Michigan has also announced that they will be providing an SAT with Essay Exam during the school day in the fall to the Class of 2021. This will replace the same exam they were planning to take this past April as part of the MME.

Save the Date for the 21st Annual Golf Outing
Save the Date - Saturday, September 19, 2020 - 21st Annual VLHS Golf Scramble
For over two decades, the Valley Lutheran Golf Scramble has been a highlight of the year: uniting VL supporters and community members for a fun day of golf and fellowship.
The planning committee intends to hold this important and fun event. We realize it may look and feel different than in the past, due to these unprecedented times we are in. As we prepare right now, we know golfing is allowed, however gatherings of our event's size are still not.
So for now, please SAVE THE DATE for the annual VLHS Golf Scramble on Saturday, September 19, 2020 at Apple Mountain. Please watch for updates during the coming months as the planning committee closely monitors the situation.

Virtual 4-H Spartan Coding Camp: June 22-25, 2020
Explore the exciting field of computer coding at MSU Extension's newest premier pre-college program! Whether you have prior computer coding knowledge, or have never even thought about it, you will gain valuable coding skills at this fun STEM summer camp.
WHERE: Virtually via Zoom, check out our website for a sample daily schedule.
WHO: Youth entering grades 9-12 in the fall of 2020.
COST: The cost to attend this four-day camp is $320 and includes tech support, post camp support, and program fees. Current Michigan 4-H members receive a $20 discount.
MATERIALS REQUIRED: Computer with internet and the ability to do video conferencing (microphone and webcam).
