Travel Award Applications due July 31, 2020
The AFS California-Nevada Chapter (Cal-Neva) Semi Annual Travel Award provides monetary awards for deserving student or young professional applicants to support their attendance of conferences, annual meetings, or workshops. Travel support of up to $750.00 will be made available for up to two successful applicants for the 2nd half of 2020. Both part I (professional form) and part II (employer form) of the completed application must be received no later than July 31, 2020 at 5:00 pm PST.

Delivered! Western Division 2020 Outstanding Large Chapter Award to Cal-Neva
Every year, the Western Division of the American Fisheries Society recognizes the chapters that best exemplify a commitment to the AFS mission through their work to achieve the goals of the Society's Strategic Plan. As we announced earlier this year, the Cal-Neva Chapter has been named the Western Division's 2020 Outstanding Large Chapter (2019 award, presented in 2020). Cal-Neva last won this award in 2008 so this year's award is truly cause for celebration! Typically, this award would be presented at the Western Division's general annual meeting, which was scheduled to take place in Vancouver, BC. However, like our chapter meeting, the Western Division meeting was cancelled due to concerns about COVID-19, so the award was delivered directly to Chapter President Rob Titus. Congratulations to officers, committee chairs, and the entire membership for its outstanding contributions to the Society and its mission during 2019, not the least of which was its role in the planning, organization, and implementation of the joint annual meeting between AFS and The Wildlife Society (TWS) in Reno, Nevada last fall.

Your Society Needs You! Call to Renew Membership
If you have not already done so, please make a point of renewing your AFS membership for 2020! Membership is more important than ever, not only for bringing fisheries professionals and students together to exchange information, build collaborations, and share in the fisheries dialogue within the California-Nevada footprint, but also to support the parent society during these very challenging times. Because the 150th Annual Meeting in Columbus, OH was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns, our parent society is losing one of its primary and major sources of income. Membership can help fill this gap and maintain fisheries advocacy and support to AFS units provided by the dedicated staff in the Bethesda office. At time of census last August, Cal-Neva was the largest chapter in AFS with 511 members! While membership was likely up in anticipation of the joint meeting with The Wildlife Society in Reno, recapturing, or even exceeding, that level of membership in 2020 will help show our solidarity and commitment to our professional society. And, remember, California State scientists in Bargaining Unit 10 are eligible to have $100 in professional society dues reimbursed to them. Please renew by the end of July 2020 so that your membership is included in this year's census. Thank you!

Miller and Lea, 2nd Edition, now available online!
Miller and Lea's Guide to the Coastal Marine Fishes of California, 2nd Edition, is now available online. This edition was revised and edited by Milton S. Love and Julianne Kalman Passarelli and is a comprehensive identification guide that encompasses all shallow water marine fishes within California waters. This new version preserves the layout, feel, and detailed line illustrations of the original, and also has over 200 additional species and a water resistant cover. In all, 753 species are described and 59 dichotomous keys are included, many with new figures and illustrations. The Cal-Neva provided some of the support that was needed to get this second edition published so we are very pleased to see it in print! You can buy your copy at ucanr.edu/3556.

We regret that in the original e-newsletter of May 10, 2020 we put the photo of Damon Goodman with the award notice for Steve Parmenter.
Steve is the first recipient of the new Moyle-Deacon Native Fishes Award, presented by Cal-Neva AFS's Native Fishes Committee. Damon is a recipient of this year's Distinguished Professional Achievement Award. Their correctly labeled photos are shown here.
