The Washington County Arts Council hosts
“Water Warp and Weft” the photographs of Donna Newcomer through November 30, 2021.
The exhibit is available in the galleries and virtually. Social distancing and wearing masks are required for all visitors in the gallery.
According to Dr. Newcomer, “The title for this exhibit is ‘Water Warp and Weft.’ My photographs predominantly reflect a water theme. Nature draws us to the water for many different reasons from the ocean to creeks and marshes. Water also weaves many patterns around our planet as well as our daily lives. For me and perhaps many, the “fabric” created by bodies of water brings balance, perspective, and peace in our lives; as well as patterns that support us in the abstract fabric of life. I hope you will enjoy Water Warp and Weft and find a few moments of peace and meditation as you view the exhibit.”

Congratulations to local artist, Mike Gouker whose drawing of “Frozen Flair” has been chosen to represent the month of January 2022 in the Simon and Schuster day by day calendar from CBS Morning News entitled “Follow the Suns.” Mr Gouker’s drawing had been used on CBS Sunday Morning in 2013. Executive Producer Rand Morrison had narrowed the choices down to 10 for the month of January and finally chose Mr. Gouker’s. Morrison had 9,000 images from which to choose. Again, congratulations.
“Follow the Suns” is available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and The Paper Store.

St. Maria Goretti Catholic High School is proud to present The Yellow Boat, an incredible play based on the life of eight-year-old Benjamin Saar and his ability to overcome emotional and physical distress through art. The beauty that Benjamin created in the face of illness is re-imagined in this production through story-telling, creative movement, and physical theatre. This production is recommended for children ages eight and older, parents, families, and adults.
Sam Little, the Director says, "this show is very special. The style is unlike most productions seen in the Hagerstown area. It is intimate, thought-provoking, ensemble-based, and deeply moving. It examines the power of art and the strength of the human spirit. If you are a fan of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime or Peter and the Starcatcher, The Yellow Boat is for you.”
Starring as Benjamin is Molly Bertone who played Amy March in Goretti High School’s production of Little Women the Musical last spring. The show also features Emma Klinko, Otto Rice, Anna Rohan, Rachel Rohan, Madeline Boothe, Tianna Allison, and Isabelle Becker.
Performance Dates are November 12, 2021 & November 13, 2021, at 7PM

Washington County Free Library Announces 35th Annual Battle of the Books Competition
This November marks the 35th year that the Washington County Free Library has held its annual Battle of the Books competition. Children in grades 4-6, along with a sponsoring adult, are invited to form teams from across the county to participate in this literary event.
The program has evolved over time, but its goal remains the same: to provide great books to kids and create positive reading experiences that will last a lifetime. The Fletcher Branch Library Children’s Department staff have selected a set of books that we hope will excite kids to read, inspire creativity, and engage in friendly competition.
The library issues the set of twenty books to registered teams of up to eight children in grades 4-6. The same books are used for all teams. Teams must have an adult team manager who is responsible for arranging transportation to and from rounds, turning in team projects, and encouraging their teams. The library does not form the teams; that is up to individual schools or parents. Managers must either be Washington County residents or have a Washington County Free Library card.
Teams have from November until late February to read the books and to complete a book related project. A written round is held on the last Saturday in February. The scores from the submitted projects and the written round score are totaled and the top eight teams advance to a final competition held on the second Saturday in March. The first and third Saturdays are snow dates.
Every child who participates receives a new paperback book and a certificate of participation. Teams that advance to the final round receive medals for their achievement. Teams may register at any library in the Washington County Free Library system during the month of November.
Books chosen for the Battle include Newbery Award and Honor books, Maryland’s Black Eyed Susan Award books, popular fiction, classics, and books that exhibit a unique perspective on the world.

One plucky community theatre is about to produce a show called Murder Most Foul, a new “murder mystery play” with the same title as an Agatha Christie novel but with no relation whatsoever. The director/theatre manager, Gerry, thought producing the play was a good idea since the inexperienced playwright has agreed to let the company perform the show for no charge. Gerry, however, had no idea what disasters awaited him: the show is hilariously amateur, the “murder mystery” plot doesn’t really have a murder, and to top it off the playwright keeps changing the story and script only two days from its premiere! It doesn’t help that the cast is disgruntled, and the playwright accidentally deletes the entire sound effect board. All of the disasters come to fruition in Act III when the company performs the actual show with hilarious mishaps at every turn. Play On! is a hilarious love letter to community theatre.

TICKETS ON SALE NOW FOR NOV. 20, 2021
ORCHESTRA CONCERT IN SHEPHERDSTOWN
The Friends of Music will present a Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra concert in Shepherdstown, WV, on Saturday, November 20.
The concert will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church at 7:30 p.m.
Entitled "Looking Bach-Wards," it will feature three works: Grieg's Holberg Suite, Bach's Concerto in C minor for violin and oboe, and Tchaikovsky's "Souvenir de Florence."
The featured artists for the Bach Concerto will be violinist Heather Austin-Stone and Oboeist Noelle Drewes.
The Orchestra's music director, Jed Gaylin, will conduct.
Admission to the concert will be free for Friends of Music members. The ticket price for others will be $35 per person. Tickets can be purchased on the Friends' website at www.friendswv.org; or by mail (FOM, PO Box 220, Shepherdstown, WV 25443); or, if space is available, at the church the evening of the performance. Visa and Master Card will be accepted.
Describing the concert program, Gaylin said: "This is an exquisitely rich program of energetic music with great sweep and melting lyricism. Grieg's work references a crisp 18th century feel starting with a brisk gallop. It ends with a folksy romp featuring fiddling by solo violin and viola. Interwoven are movements with great melody. Bach's Concerto for Violin and Oboe accentuates the rich, deep color palate of these two instruments. The lines intertwine in something akin to a shimmering vocal duet. The middle movement is especially powerful in its beauty. Tchaikovsky's memento from his time in Florence captures both the fiery virtuosity of Italian string instruments, as well as the cantabile of the country where opera was born."
The Friends of Music is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1999 to support and promote musical excellence. The Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra was established by the Friends in 2007 and held its first concert in the fall of 2008. Gaylin has been music director since 2012. He also serves as the music director of Baltimore's Hopkins Symphony Orchestra and the Bay Atlantic Symphony in New Jersey, and he is the Principal Guest Conductor of the Cape May Music Festival.
This season's Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra concerts are once again being presented with generous financial assistance from the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History and the National Endowment for the Arts, with approval from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts.
Full information about the Friends, the Orchestra, and the concert season is available at www.friendswv.org.

Authentic Community Theatre presents Matilda Jr.
Friday, January 7, 2022 • 7:00 pm
Saturday, January 8, 2022 • 7:00 pm
| |
Rebellion is nigh in Matilda JR., a gleefully witty ode to the anarchy of childhood and the power of imagination! This story of a girl who dreams of a better life and the children she inspires will have audiences rooting for the "revolting children" who are out to teach the grown-ups a lesson.
Matilda has astonishing wit, intelligence... and special powers! She's unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Matilda's school life isn't completely smooth sailing, however – the school's mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don't abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts and could be the school pupils' saving grace!
