MUSD forecasts balanced budget for 2020-21 despite COVID-19 impact
|
Although the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted school district budgets throughout the country, Milpitas Unified School District’s continuous track record of fiscal responsibility has allowed for a proposed balanced budget for the 2020-21 school term.
“As you know this year, 2020, is a very different year that we will probably never forget,” said Assistant Superintendent Wendy Zhang, whose Business Services Team led the

preceding the June 9, 2020 Board of Education meeting. “The financial impact caused by this COVID pandemic is huge.”
Unexpected COVID-related expenditures coupled with Governor Gavin Newsom’s 10-percent reduction to education in the proposed state budget have forced MUSD to shift about $15 million in reserve funds to help balance its 2020-21 budget.
“When Governor Newsom proposed the reductions to education, he did not release much detail on how to implement the cuts of the subsequent years following 2020-21,” Zhang explained. “With this large scale reduction to education, it leaves us with no choice (but to tap our reserves) to have a balanced budget.”

Thi Le, who just completed her seventh grade year at Thomas Russell Middle School, was recognized by the Superintendent and Board of Education for taking first place in the 2020 Young Artists Showcase and Silicon Valley Reads Competition.

women’s suffragette and leading figure in the Women’s Social and Political Union.

Milpitas family recognized for mask-making, support for local community during crisis
|

Avinash Subramanian, a senior at Milpitas High School, Ashika Subramanian, an eighth grader at Thomas Russell Middle School, and mother Latha Subbu have been helping produce masks for the Milpitas community. The local family continues to volunteer their time to service groups throughout the area.

MUSD COVID-19 Advisory Task Force 2020-21 shares progress, scenarios with Board

Superintendent Cheryl Jordan and the MUSD COVID-19 Advisory Task Force 2020-21 presented considerations, scenarios, and direction for phasing in the new school year as part of their presentation to the Board. Watch the full report

The Advisory Task Force is compromised of representatives from elementary, middle, high school, and district operations teams. Leaders of the Classified School Employees Association, Chapter 281, Milpitas Teachers Association, and Milpitas Management Association have been integral participants in the Task Force.
The Task Force reviewed surveys from parents, students, and team members as well as suggested considerations and ideas for planning. The scenarios and information presented at the June 9 meeting were developed with the input in mind.
In order to assure that as many voices are included in the planning process as possible, an additional community and parent survey was opened from June 2-June 9. Subcommittees are forming and will focus on details of the overall planning through the mid-point of July.
The County Public Health Department Officers in conjunction with the Santa Clara County Office of Education have announced that a more definitive path to in-person teaching and learning will be publicized by July 1.

MUSD's Child Development Centers keep learning going for youngest students

The Child Development Centers, at both Rose and Sunnyhills, did not skip a beat in educating MUSD’s youngest students as the County Shelter in Place came into effect in mid-March. Coordinator Gerardo Lopez and his CDC team shared an update with the Board at the June 9 meeting.
By maintaining 100 percent engagement from its students, CDC received full reimbursement from the State for services, as well as an additional $75,000 for its continued education throughout the school year.
“We never stopped operating,” said Lopez, who described his team’s work as challenging but very rewarding, as they developed packets and schedules for their students during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Students enrolled at CDC were given supplies such as crayons, scissors and glue to help complete their distance learning assignments. Each month, the team assembled packets for families to pick up. Multilingual paraprofessionals were utilized to contact families and keep them apprised of school activities.
Additionally, the CDC created at YouTube Channel, with videos of circle time, exercises, and other age-relevant content; an app for parents to access lessons on digital devices; and bi-weekly Google Hangouts to engage their students.
The CDC also recently launched its childcare program for Essential Workers.
