Fun Fact
What is that funny umbrella-shaped tree frequently spotted on the Chilean horizon?
It is the national tree, the Araucaria, which is the hardiest tree in the conifer family. It has thick, reptile-like branches with triangular pointy leaves. As the tree matures, the lower branches fall off giving the top an umbrella shape. Mature trees produce piƱones, similar to a large pine nut, which were a staple in the diet of the indigenous people. Although the species is listed as endangered, we saw many of these majestic gems when we traveled to southern Chile in September.

Prayers & Praise
We thank you for your prayer support! Mission work is first and foremost a ministry of prayer.

That God would be with our vicar Marcelo, his wife Vania, and daughters Amanda and Angela as He shapes them to be a pastoral family in Chile.

* That God would guide Soni & Ty and Gabi &  Daniel as they parent their two small children; that He would give them wisdom, energy and patience.

* Thank the Lord that Jim's dad, Dennis, had successful surgery to remove cancer. Pray for the health of Norma and Edwin as they have "unanswered" health issues.

* Pray for the many people who are missing loved ones during this season of holiday celebrations. Pray that our hope remains in the birth of the Savior.

* Pray for God's guidance as we reach out to the lost here in Santiago. Pray that He sends musicians for Liisa to teach and leaders for Jim to train.

* Thank God that Jim was able to be a speaker at the recent National Youth Gathering in Guatemala, and also use the opportunity to visit our GLO missionaries and partners throughout that Central American country.
MEET BRIELLE!
Happy grandparents with Brielle and Braxton_
Brielle was born in Miramar, Florida on October 22!  We are thankful that Liisa was able to be there with Soni, Tyler and Braxton for the big day. Later, abuelito Jim arrived for her baptism on November 17. We praise God for this healthy girl and for the joy a 4 th grandchild brings to the family!

Who will set me free from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord
(Romans 7:24-25)

Christmas is in the air... maybe. In some places, maybe not so much. It's a little hard to get in the "Christmas spirit" if your country is in turmoil, or if your family is messed up, or if you just lost your job, or if a loved one is seriously ill. It's hard to be kind, generous, and jovial when you are hurting, and it's easy to become despondent or even bitter.
Many Christians have pointed out that the antidote to bitterness and depression is - thankfulness! It's good that Thanksgiving comes before Christmas. It helps us to get our hearts in the right place with God as we prepare to celebrate His birth. Whatever is going on in your life (or in ours), we have a Reason to be thankful. Even if you can't see your blessings right now, we can all thank God that He came to us - in Bethlehem, in a manger, to deliver us from all that ails us. What a message! What a hope! What Good News to share in your home, in your community, and to the ends of the earth!
What's going on with the Tinos in Chile? We hope you enjoy these updates from our ministry!

Christmas THANKFULNESS is in the air...
...FOR OUR NEW VICAR AND HIS FAMILY!
Marcelo was officially installed as vicar at the Providencia mission on August 18. He and his wife, Vania, and their two daughters have become an important part of the ministry. Jim's job as his mentor is to guide and to teach him as he prepares Bible studies and sermons and prepare him to be an "all-terrain" pastor. During these first few months, we are thankful that Marcelo could "hold down the fort" during our various trips. The vicar has been visiting members, has initiated a Young Adult group and even had to officiate a funeral!  God has supplied us with a great team player!
...FOR GOD'S PROTECTION DURING THE RECENT SOCIAL UPHEAVAL IN CHILE
As you have probably seen or heard in the news,
Can you figure out what this is?
Chile has been in a state of chaos since October 18. What started as a protest against an increase in bus and subway fares, became a warzone for a plethora of grievances and claims of "inequalities". We say a "warzone" because even now, a month later, you see burned-out buildings, graffiti covered historic buildings and boarded up businesses throughout the city.  Manifestations - sometimes violent - break out almost daily. Roads are blocked. The subway stations are shut down. Business hours and the school day have been shortened for safety reasons.

Burned and graffiti-covered metro station
The government is trying to control the outbursts, but still the people continue to protest. Fortunately, we live in a more peaceful part of town, so we can avoid some of the "ugliness". However, our mother church in La Florida is in the middle of one of the rebellious areas. All the grocery stores and metro stations close to the church are still closed because of the excessive damage. Pray that the country would return to a peaceful, normal life. Click here to see what a protest looks like up close and personal (which we try not to be!)

...FOR OUR NEW PROPERTY!!
We give immense thanks to our Heavenly Father that we finally have a new property for our growing mission. Pastor Jim and many people from the church have worked hard  to accomplish the first stage: a place for the  vicar and his family to live. Next, we are making  repairs and changes to the house so that we can transfer all of the ministry activities, including housing immigrants, to the new location.  Lord willing, we will be moving into the new church in January. Click here to check out some of the before and after pictures from the new property!
...FOR OUR "ADOPTED FAMILY"
It was a joy to be able to share the tradition of Thanksgiving with the 6 people who live in our mission home. As they experienced the flavors of a roasted, stuffed turkey with gravy and all the fixings, they told us how thankful they were that God had provided them with a "family" here in Chile. As we dearly miss our family in the States, we thank the Lord that He has blessed us with these fine young people who are growing in their faith and using their gifts for God's kingdom. Thank YOU for making this ministry possible with your faithful gifts and prayers.

We praise God for each of you,  our "mission partners". As we close out the end of 2019 (and are now into our 6th year in Chile!), we do so with THANKS to God for providing for our needs through YOUR generosity! May the Lord bless you and your household this Christmas and throughout the new year!
