"Finding Strength in Unity and Community" are a series of town hall discussions led by youth who are part of the TAT Team (Transitional Age Youth Action Team) in various counties.  These virtual events will inspire and uplift the conversation affecting TAY (Transitional Age Youth, ages 15-26).

Parolees face many challenges as they re-enter their communities. Stable and affordable housing, as well as access to food, clothing, and job readiness, are just some of those challenges. For those with a mental illness, these challenges increase. The Integrated Services for Mentally Ill Parolees program (program) provides individuals on parole (parolees) with mental health and housing services as they transition back into society. However, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (Corrections), which operates the program, has not fulfilled its role in overseeing it. In addition, Corrections has not demonstrated a clear link between the program's services and reduced rates of reincarceration among participants, one of the Legislature's primary intentions when establishing the program.

Racial equity matters in recovery support, and peer-run and recovery community organizations across the country are taking steps to learn more about how they can become more equitable and inclusive. Black people, in or seeking recovery, are less likely to access treatment and recovery support services than the general population, although they experience mental illness and substance use disorder at similar rates.

 

Presenters will highlight key indicators and challenges and describe best practices and promising strategies for advancing racial equity.
