Sunapee Happenings
Autumn Days
Misty October Morning on Burkehaven Hill. Photo: w. anne gazelle
Many have discovered the “secret” reality that September and October are two of our very finest months here in the Lake Sunapee region. Days that dawn in a misty morning, tend to soon be radiant with sunshine. Last week gifted us with several absolutely perfect autumn days!… with a promise of even more this week. Things are still crazy busy all around the town. My hunch is that a great many of us are hanging on to light and warmth as long and steadfastly as possible in a continuing uncertain time.

attention
Attention all waterfront property owners. Lake Sunapee Protective Association, guardians of our lake and watershed are sharing advice to keep all waterbodies in the region healthy and pristine for generations to enjoy.
Now is the time to check to make sure your dock de-icer is up to code and working properly.

This month if you are into fall projects and working on docks and considering de-icers, please check out our website for information on de-icers, guidelines plus lake safety and environmental concerns. Recent issues regarding electrical currents in the water are still ongoing and lake residents are encouraged, as they prepare for winter, to double check the wiring that connects to their docks and de-icers. Remember, regular inspection, testing, and maintenance can find electrical system deficiencies that permit electric current to pass through the water.

Click Here to go to our web page all about dock de-icers!
Lakefront property owners please be aware that dumping leaves in the lake is not only a nuisance to others, it can cause a multitude of problems... murky waters, slimy lake floors, algal issues... to name just a few. Leaves, grass clippings and similar debris add nutrients to the water that use up precious oxygen as they decompose. A wide variety of aquatic organisms need that oxygen. Please be good stewards of our water and land by disposing of leaves and similar waste to a compost pile either on your land, or at a designated compost site near you. Check in with your town transfer stations; most are now accepting leaf and yard waste.

"leaf peeping"
Here in New Hampshire we take our “Leaf Peeping Season” very seriously as the bright golds, reds and oranges of changing foliage paint the forests in beautiful colors.  Hint: a favorite walk... park on River Road in Sunapee, cross the Covered Bridge and stroll along the Sugar River... past the landmark Livery (one of NH’s most photographed sites) and on down to the Harbor.  Connect to the Historical Society’s Clio app for a guided tour. Perhaps venture further afield with a drive thru the country side. Life’s too short not to go on that spontaneous road trip!
