JULY & AUGUST 2020 NEWSLETTER - ISSUE NO: 111
Good Morning ,

SOCIAL FIGSTANCING
Thanks to Scottish Member
Fiona Reid for this figgy
clothing innovation.
Don't worry we're not in July just yet but being a Sunday we thought you may wish to read this today rather than in the week.

We hope you are safe and well during these continued strange times? Lockdown has been a long slog that's for sure and so frustrating that almost every event we had planned (and then had to cancel) the weather was sunny, dry and warm. It all started with the Ace Cafe, two weeks later we were supposed to be meeting a number of members at Caffeine & Machine. By the time it got to the Cotswolds Weekend with unprecedented sunshine I decided I wouldn't remind Sue again of another missed event so kept mum!

Anyway onto more positive thoughts and as the saying goes, ' time flies when you're enjoying yourself '. Although most of the world has been on hold, strangely here at the club we have been busier than ever. We put this down to members either working more from home or being furloughed and having more time to carry out all those growing Figaro jobs. Either way we are more than happy to help by providing help and advice and creating yet more videos. I too have been tinkered away on our Figaro Belle in my man cave (well really keeping out the way of Sue). I made some nice additions to the engine bay like painting the handle of the engine and gearbox dipsticks bright yellow. For once I can actually see the gearbox dipstick knob lurking down in the depths of the engine. See the Ownership Restoration article below.

This publication includes a number of translations such as the Model Codes, Roof Closing Instructions ,  Breakdown Flare, Fuse Box and lastly the Price List published by Nissan and issued to the dealers back in 1991. It's hard to believe but it shows that the car was actually sold without the CD player as this was an option along with the air conditioning. And we know this was the case as one owner based in Japan brought her car the returned two weeks later to the dealer after deciding she wanted the CD Player after all. With the help Japanese Member Yuki Saga we are now working are way through the Accessories Price List which we will bring to you next month.

After months in my 'pending file' we finally received permission from the BBC to publish the Doctor Who story. This was a great opportunity for one of our members to help which was snapped up by member Ian Williams late last year. Ian did a fantastic job for the club by turning out in some questionable weather to help re-create some of the iconic imagery from the series.

Sad news of the passing of Joyce Richardson after a short illness. Joyce loved attending our rallies along with husband Ken Richardson and we are so blessed to have been part of their lives even if it was a small part and created some lovely memories for them both.

A personal invitation from me to attend the largest Figaro party on earth

Is it time to review your cars Security?

It's a sad fact of life that as a club we have to keep revisiting this issue. The growth of the internet has made it easier than ever to sell Figaro parts with little or no traceability. In addition to cars being stolen for resale, we have a theory at the club that the high cost of Figaro parts has led to cars being specifically targeted by gangs and broken for parts.

"the high cost of Figaro parts has led to cars being targeted by gangs"

At a very minimum we urge all owners to have an 'Immobiliser' fitted which will ma ke the car much harder to start and drive away. However it will not stop the car from being jacked up and towed away!

To help provide impartial and expert advice to our members the club has partnered with Autodynamics. The company are an independent Vehicle Alarm Specialists with over 20 years experience within the industry, stocking all major brands, and being a Thatcham Recognised Installer, they have pioneered many new installation techniques and products. They have extensive knowledge of fitting a wide range of security packages to Figaros. Download 10 page Guide Click here
Joyce losses fight after short illness

Last month we received some sad news from Welsh member Kenneth Richardson. After a short illness Joyce sadly passed away on the 4th of March. Ken said he had been out in his Figaro a few times but without Joyce by his side it just didn't feel right any more as all he could see was Joyce waving the rally flag. Ken & Joyce attended many of the club's rallies over the years and we know will be sadly missed by us all.

"I can still see Joyce waving the rally flags when driving the Figaro"
At Last a repair that won' break the bank!

We know how much money a Figaro repair can usually cost but not this time! These little grommets seal the adjustment holes (normally empty) in the IAA unit located in the engine bay. The grommets stop dirt getting into the threads of the adjuster screws also acts as an extra air seal if the O rings inside are leaky.

You can buy a pack of 10 of these and they blank the 3 adjustment holes for just £2.58 (UK). Make sure you select 12mm. Read more
Delivery labels translated

If you were lucky enough to drive a new Figaro away from a showroom in 1991 you would have noticed these three labels within the cabin. Today they are very rare so if you have a set as part of your cars paperwork then look after them!

We have translated the three labels which include the gear selection, key position and turbocharger. Read more

Figaro Model Codes Explained

Japanese member Yuki Saga has kindly translated what the symbols on the model codes actually mean. In 1991 Nissan produced 19,258 with model numbers GACARFDK10TDA and 786 with model number GACARFDK10T ZA. Each of these symbols mean something, for instance ' Z' means 786 cars were built for cold regions.

In Japan, a "cold regions" is the area where the temperature drops below minus 20 degrees Celsius in winter. Some parts have been upgraded so that the engine can run even in cold winters, which is the cold-weather version. This is because Japan's land mass is long and the temperature is very different between the north and the south. Read more
New - Engine Recondition Webpage

A number of members have been asking where they can buy a replacement engine so we have created a specific page which explains with options and costs.  The Figaro MA10ET 1.0L Turbo is a brilliant bullet-proof engine and if well maintained and will provide years of good service, in fact we know of some cars which have over 200,000 kms on the clock! However at some point getting a Reconditioned Engine may be the only option if it undergoes a catastrophic seizer, overheats or is simply beyond economical repair.

Roof operation A4 card translated

The car was supplied with a roof operational card as standard. Written in Japanese but does contain many cartoon style images which are useful.

We have translated this and if you do not have a copy made it downloadable. Read/Download

New - Electric Nissan Figaro (EV) Webpage

Today, everyone seems to be talking about electric vehicles and many Figaro owners are obviously wondering if it's possible to convert the car to electric? The wish to travel in silence, produce zero emissions whilst saving money on fuel is becoming more and more viable as battery technology improves. We have featured three conversions and provided links so you can learn more about the complexities of the conversion. Read more
Rare manufacturing colour pictures

If you Google Nissan Figaro you will find some original production pictures but most are in black and white.

We have located some rare colour shots of the car being welded by robots and painted during production. You may not be aware that these would have been taken not at Nissan but at the Takada Kogyo factory in Tokyo where the car was assembled. Learn more

Figaro Art

Created by German artist Raimund Göbner Bildhauer this large Figaro model has been hand carved out of Limewood which is used for model making.

We love the detail of this giant wooden Figaro which is complete with driver, passenger two dogs in the back. The model was exhibited back in March and is now owned by Luxembourg members Peter & Andrea Häussler.

Enjoy many pictures of the model Read more
Building in reliability - Read Part 3 of the Figaro Series in May/June Classics Magazine

With the help of our club's tutorials, editor Simon Goldsworthy tackled the tricky job of changing the timing belt in addition to sorting out a sheared bolt and resolving some electrical issues.

The comprehensive feature is super detailed and a useful future guide for owners. At the finish our very own Simon Smith carried out a road test and thorough check over and helped prioritise future jobs f or simon to do.

Seat Removal and Refit Video

We kept getting asked " how do I remove the rear bench seat?" so decided to make a short video. Kevin takes you through how to take out the front seats along with some tips and moves on to the technique of how to remove the rear bench seat with the hidden clips! So it could be you want to re-dye your carpet or work on the seats, whatever the reason the video shows you how.

Rear light re-chroming issue has now been solved claim The Figaro Shop

Anyone who owns the car will be aware of the issues regarding the rear light chroming deterioration. No matter how good the car and other parts of the chrome can sparkle the poor design of the rear light housing means that water cannot escape so over time this leads to a dulling of the area, you can actually see where the water has been sat over time. Or worse it lifts the chrome plating looking awful. When this happens many owners have been forced to apply chrome tape which can look patchy to say the least or repaint the housing white which strangely looks okay but a departure from how the car should look..

However, if you are a chrome lover like me then re-chroming is the only way. It should be simple yes? Well no apparently re-chroming an existing plastic casing is technically very difficult. The Figaro Shop thought they had found a solution a few years back but after a number of months it was clear that the consistent quality was hard to achieve so it was dropped. So it was back to the drawing board but last week we had news that after 2 years researching the best refinishing techniques for chromed plastic parts, they have now found a solution. They claim the finish looks fantastic and has been protected using a hard wearing clear lacquer to give the best long lasting finish. The price is very expensive from £299.99 - £359.99 and you will need to send your back as part of a rotation service. But if you are craving the ultimate Figaro it may be worth it Learn more

Nissan Figaro Engine Bay Cleaning
Kevin cleaning the engine bay of Belle with tips and advice

Our son Daniel back in June 2008
How the club started
Our son Daniel had always wanted a Nissan Figaro having seen the car at our local garage when he was just 16! We confess we had no idea what a Figaro was? A few years passed and after saving for a number of years (plus a small contribution from his mum and dad) he brought an Emerald Green model in June 2008 and named it 'Figgy'.

Following the purchase we searched the internet for an 'owners club' in the hope that he could attend events but were amazed that none existed at the time.
And so the Figaro Owners Club was born! Initially we created a basic website and forum and on the 1st March 2009 pressed the 'publish button' and waited to see if anyone wanted to join. Within a week we had 10 members, a month 35 and a year 478 members. That was all we needed to confirm that there was clearly a need for such a club.
Today the club has around 1,200 members worldwide in countries including
New Zealand, Japan, Australia, USA, Canada, Germany, Spain, France,
Belgium, Luxembourg, Sweden and many more.
We are grateful to you and all our other members for help and encouragement throughout our journey as the club has grown into a passion which has taken over our lives.
Warmest Regards
