MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

Dear Colleagues:

I have been at Ohio State for six weeks now, and every day has been filled with important things to accomplish and attend to. Last week was especially busy as I participated in the events that were part of the Ohio Dental Association’s three-day annual session.

For those of you who are familiar with this event, it is an impressive experience. As expected, there are continuing education courses; numerous exhibits; legislative sessions; and many social events that give people a chance to relax, reconnect with friends, or get acquainted with newcomers like me.

Most importantly, I was glad to have a chance to learn more about the ways our college benefits from its special partnership with the Ohio Dental Association. Our students receive generous scholarship awards each year, and we have partnered together for numerous Give Kids a Smile events and other activities that enrich our students’ educational experiences. For all these things, I am personally grateful.

Another special event is the Callahan Celebration of Excellence, where awards are presented to Ohio’s dental professionals whose achievements have had a significant impact on the profession. I am proud that our faculty emeriti and our alumni featured prominently in this year’s ODA awards. And I am glad to have been part of the celebration that recognized these members of our college community.

I also had a great time at the reception that our Dental Alumni Society hosted. We all mingled, and it gave me an opportunity to meet our wonderful alumni before the presentation of three Distinguished Alumni Awards, and the prize drawing for a football signed by Archie Griffin.

Everyone at the event was given a free ticket for the drawing, and I was asked to do the honors. I reached into the basket to pull out the winning ticket, and I read the winning number. But no one seemed to have it. So I read it again. Everyone looked around at each other, and then they all looked again at their tickets. And so did I. It was ME! I had the winning ticket.

It was a remarkable moment, and it is a memory I will always treasure. The football will be displayed prominently in the Office of the Dean so that others can enjoy seeing it, and so I will be reminded daily of my most special “scarlet and gray” experience to date.

Our alumni reception at the ODA brought together our faculty, staff, alumni, and friends who made me feel proud to be a Buckeye!
Go Buckeyes!
