Aboriginal to Indigenous: why the change?

At Sport for Life we believe it is important that we all learn about the history of Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada, and take lessons from our past into account when making decisions in the present day. This is best done by taking time to build relationships, learn about protocols and culture, and ask questions with an open heart and open mind. This is a crucial part of our journey to work together promoting physical literacy and quality sport on a global scale.

Sport for Life anticipates completion of Egyptian multisport academy

He’s built a lot of arts schools, and he’s built a lot of sports facilities, but he’s never built one that combines both pursuits. That’s all about to change as Egyptian architect Nader Goubran nears the construction stage of the Apex Academy in Cairo, which will incorporate physical literacy, sports and arts right into the students’ everyday curriculum. 

ȽÁU, WELṈEW̱ Tribal School incorporates traditional language into physical literacy education

When Sport for Life mobilizes physical literacy initiatives, it’s routinely necessary to custom-design programs so they fit their particular context. In the case of ȽÁU, WELṈEW̱ Tribal School, that has meant translating games and activities into the students’ traditional language.

A brief history of the physical literacy research group

The physical literacy movement was still in its infancy when Sport for Life director Drew Mitchell decided something needed to be done to address the lack of research in the area. People were enthusiastically throwing themselves into active living initiatives, keen to innovate, but they didn’t have the hard data necessary to support their efforts.

International Physical Literacy Conference Europe 2019

The International Physical Literacy Conference Europe, hosted by the Sport for Life Society and Change the Game, will be the first conference to be held in this region on September 11 – 13, 2019 with pre- and post-conference workshops taking place on September 10 and 14, respectively.. It will host global leaders to share their best practices and research to advance the worldwide physical literacy movement.

Trinbagonian athlete development expert hops aboard the Canadian physical literacy train

Kabir Hosein had to make a big move.
The Trinbagonian athlete development expert had reached a point in his career where he was faced with a difficult choice: remain in his position as the chief administrative officer for Trinidad and Tobago’s track and field program, or enter into the world of politics. His wife was in a similar position, both of them ambitious self-starters in the world of sports, but opportunities for upward movement were scarce. So they started looking for a third option outside the Caribbean.

Cultural Awareness in Youth Sport elearning course

Sport offers many opportunities to meet people and learn about various cultures. This course on Cultural Awareness in Youth Sport examines the basic concept of culture and provides sport leaders with practical ways to model cultural awareness to youth players.

Indigenous Communities: Active for Life

The Indigenous Communities: Active for Life resource and accompanying full-day workshop were created with guidance from Indigenous leaders throughout the country, with the purpose of inspiring community leaders looking for culturally tailored resources that act as a vehicle toward individual and community holistic development.

The resource and workshop supports these individual champions as they embark on a journey to develop sustainable quality sport and physical activity programs, build collaborative relationships, and re-engage their community members into active and healthy lifestyles.
