Meet Jason Fortner, MDiv Student

Bexley Seabury Master of Divinity student Jason Fortner of the Diocese of Indianapolis says his ministry is rooted in the joy of service. We asked Jason what led him to seminary, and how he chose Bexley Seabury.

"I’m an active lay minister at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church In Lebanon, Indiana. I’m a member of the altar guild, a lector, cantor, and frequent altar server. Also, occasionally I serve as thurifer.

"I have been junior warden and a vestry member in the past. I find great joy in this service, and it was while serving in these capacities that I began to sense a renewed call to ministry. I’ve been a public high school Spanish teacher for nearly 25 years. So, I’ve sensed my call to ordained ministry later in life than some.

ALUMS A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION
"My priest is a Bexley Seabury alumnus, and many priests who mentor and inspire me in the Diocese of Indianapolis have BSSF connections. Also, the flexibility of the class schedule and the proximity to my home were important factors in choosing Bexley Seabury.

VIBRANT COMMUNITY LIFE
"The sense of community is much stronger than I anticipated it might be. The formation retreats and online sessions help a great deal. The face-to-face classes, while few, are a wonderful chance to deepen relationships that we’ve been forming online through discussions and Zoom classroom meetings. Worshipping together is always wonderful!

So far, the material in the classes I’ve taken has been very compelling and motivates me to find time to work hard in between teaching, family life, and my time in my home parish."
