PSAT Day - Wednesday, Oct 13th
The PSAT exam is an important upcoming assessment for high school students on Wednesday, October 13. As a reminder, the PSAT is for ALL 10th grade students as well as 9th or 11th grade students who have registered and paid to take the exam. Due to COVID-19, the number of students we can place in our large group spaces is significantly reduced. This makes it difficult to provide a learning space for students who are not participating in the PSAT. To ensure both student safety and the optimal testing environment, we will allow flexibility to students on this day. High school students who are not participating in the PSAT may complete assigned work from home or at school on this day.  Assigned work will be due on Thursday, October 14 or Friday, October 15th, depending upon the class.

We need to have a REQUIRED senior meeting to share information on ordering cap and gowns, graduation fees, etc. We have 777 seniors and we have a couple hundred that are here part-time or not on campus at all. We thought October 13th the day of the PSAT would be a great time for ALL seniors to come on campus for a 45min assembly. Please use the sign-up genius below to select your preferred time - 9am, 10am, or 11am. There are 270 slots available for each time the assembly is being offered. All seniors can drive this day and do not need a parking tag. Students MUST be in dress code to enter campus.

Police Unity Tour
We Ride for Those Who Died

With an inaugural ride in May 1997, the Police Unity Tour (PUT) continues today supporting our fallen officers with a three-day bicycle ride covering 250 miles from Portsmouth, Virginia to Washington, DC and into the National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial (NLEOM) during Peace Officer Memorial Week. The motivation behind the PUT is we ride for all the men and women in Law Enforcement who died in the line of duty to honor their sacrifices. Each rider and support team member individually raises a minimum of $2,000. In a collaborative effort, Team Northeast Florida has a goal to raise $50,000 for the National Law Enforcement Office Memorial (NLEOM). Team Northeast Florida includes active and retired police officers from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office, and their survivors. Team Northeast Florida represents Police Unity Tour Chapter VIII which includes riders and support team members not only from Florida but also, North Carolina, South Carolina, Louisiana, Arizona, Georgia, Alabama, and as far away as the United Kingdom.

As the memorial wall is not federally funded, all donations directly fund the care and maintenance of the NLEOM in Washington, DC, where over 22,000 fallen officers are honored for their sacrifices with their names engraved on the memorial wall. In May 2022, PUT members throughout the United States will ride into Washington, D.C. to honor the fallen officers who died during 2021. As a reminder of those who have fallen, each PUT riders and support team member wears a blue metal memorial bracelet which is engraved with the name, department, and end of watch date of a fallen officer during the 250 mile ride.
After arriving in Washington, DC, riders, support team members, and the families of the fallen officers gather at the NLEOM for a candlelight vigil, where first year PUT riders, dressed in their Class A uniforms, line both sides of the NLEOM entrance corridor. They alone have the honor and privilege of greeting the surviving spouses, presenting them with a rose, and escorting them to their seats.

As we have already begun training for the 2022 PUT ride, we also have begun our fundraising efforts. The PUT and members of Team Northeast Florida, including me, appreciate your support as We Ride for those Who Died. If you’d like to know more about the Police Unity Tour and our mission, please do not hesitate to contact me at  jgordon@sjso.org or 904-439-1513.

Your generosity and support for our fallen officers and their families is greatly appreciated.

Field Trips Set to Resume for Academy Students
After a full year without them, the St. Johns County School District is authorizing Academy field trips to resume. When field trips are scheduled, Academy teachers will provide field trip forms to students in eligible classes (field trips are generally designated for specific classes). Students need to get both sides of the field trip form completed and turned back in to their Academy teacher. There is usually a 30-student limit to field trips, and they are first come, first served. So if there’s a field trip you are excited about attending, be sure to get that form filled out and turned in ASAP!

We are going to have a CELEBRATION of Hispanic Heritage at Nease and we need your help!
To celebrate our culture, our heritage, and our people, I will be hosting a “Hispanic Heritage Celebration” in our media center on Wednesday, Oct. 6th during Excel time. We would LOVE parent support and help! We are hoping to have a showcase of foods, music, dress, flags, decorations, and anything else you can help us with for the event. If you are able to help us out in some way, PLEASE email me as soon as possible so that I can count on you!! Thank you so much!! Que Viva Mi Gente!

FIRST LADY CASEY DESANTIS ANNOUNCES 2021 HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH THEME
First Lady Casey DeSantis announced that the theme for Hispanic Heritage Month will be “Celebrating Hispanic-American Community Leaders and Champions” and released information regarding the student art and essay contests and Excellence in Education awards. One HIGH SCHOOL student will receive a 4-Year Florida College Plan scholarship provided by the Florida Prepaid College Foundation. Let’s see if one of our Nease students can win this prize! Please click on this link for all the details! https://floridahispanicheritage.com/
PARENT/ADULT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! PLEASE HELP US!
Our school library media center is the “heart” of our school and a HUGE part of our student life on campus. We would LOVE to have some of our parents help us out at our circulation desk in the mornings or after school. If you are willing and able to help us out, please click on the link below and sign up to become a part of our “library” family. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to email me at carolyn.milian@stjohns.k12.fl.us . Thank you so much and let’s have an awesome year! You’re going to LOVE our space and all our incredible students!

EXCEL CHANGES IN MEDIA CENTER!
We are no longer handing out wristbands for students to be in here for both Excel sessions. We will ONLY hand out wristbands for either Excel A or Excel B but NOT both. This will go into effect on Wed., Oct. 27th but next Wednesday, Oct. 6th, the media center is ONLY open during Excel for our Hispanic Heritage Celebration. Too many students want to just hang out in the media center the entire time and it is causing too much traffic and chaos and crowd control issues. And as a reminder – we will NO LONGER hand out wristbands at the door. Students MUST pick up wristbands by 11 a.m. the latest if they want to come into the media center for Excel. We will still have Excel tutors available during this time if students need help. HOWEVER, they must secure an “Excel tutoring pass” from their teacher or from me in the media center before Excel time.

COFFEE STATION DONATIONS!
In our media center we have a coffee station set up with a Keurig for our students to help themselves to a cup of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate in the mornings, during lunch, and after school. But our supplies are beginning to run low. If you are willing and able to help donate so we can keep this going for our students, these are some of the items we need:
·        K -cups (assorted)
·        10 oz. coffee cups (lots)
·        Creamer (individual packs or powdered. No refrigerated creamers please)
·        Individually wrapped stirrers
·        Paper towel rolls
·        Napkins
Thank you so much for anything you can help out with so we can continue this little “perk” for our students.

SENIORS!! Get your “Panther Café Senior Tile”! This is your chance to IMMORTALIZE yourself in our library!
ALL seniors have the opportunity to take home one of our café area ceiling tiles, paint and personalize it, then have it placed back into our ceiling for a donation of $25. The money raised from this fundraiser will be used to purchase new computers for our media center and at the same time have our seniors immortalized in our café as these will never be repainted! Please contact me in the media center for more information.
STUDENT LIFE!
La Fuerza is a Latinx/Hispanic Student Union striving to create a welcoming and inclusive community for students here at Nease.
