CUGH’s Special July Bulletin
Dear colleague,
There are so many activities taking place at CUGH and amongst our members, we thought we would release this special July bulletin to keep you up-to-date on these exciting events.
We recently released two important platforms that go to the heart of any countries’ ability to address the SDGs. Also included is information on our annual call for new mentors and mentees for our highly successful Global Health Program Advisory Service.
This month we released our Capacity Building Platform. It is a tool that institutions, particularly those in low and middle-income countries can use to share their training needs and attract trainers across biomedical and non-biomedical disciplines who can help them strengthen their training programs. This tool could be very useful in helping to reduce human resources deficits in low income countries.
We released our crowdsourcing site to identify research questions that scientists may wish to address. Finally, we are seeking individuals who wish to be mentors or mentees for our one-year Global Health Program Advisory Service.
This bulletin features CUGH member Boston College and the inaugural issue of the Journal of Global Health Science from our members in Korea.

Register Now for CUGH's Webinar on the EBOLA crisis in the DRC: a CDC Update
Our upcoming webinar,
July 22nd at 1pm EST
will discuss the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This outbreak is the largest to occur in DRC and is now the second largest Ebola outbreak in the history of the disease.
Only the 2014–2016 outbreak in West Africa was larger. The outbreak is occurring in a highly insecure environment, which complicates public health response activities and increases the risk of disease spread.
This webinar will outline Ebola Virus Disease, the current situation on the ground, and US government and international response efforts - including key public health approaches to disease control.

CUGH's Capacity Building Platform
The deficit in skilled human resources across a wide range of biomedical and non-biomedical areas is worsening. This is particularly acute in low and low middle-income countries. To tackle this challenge, the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) has created this online capacity building platform. It will assist institutions in low income countries (LIC) to connect with trainers and the educational products they need. The site has two parts: the first enables LIC institutions to list their specific training needs; the second, is a portal for institutions to list the trainers they have who are interested in providing training.

We have a an opportunity to do a better job connecting real world problems with research capabilities.
CUGH has created this online tool
to bridge that gap. We are inviting institutions, governments, NGOs and companies to post funded research questions (from high or middle income nations) or unfunded questions (low- income nations) on this site.

Now accepting applications for the 5th cohort of the CUGH Global Health Program Advisory Service (GHPAS) Mentorship Program!
GHPAS is a CUGH mentorship program that connects global health program leaders interested in creating, growing, or strengthening their global health programs, with individuals who have substantial programmatic experience in global health and are committed to providing mentorship through the provision of personalized, targeted guidance.
Details:
- The program provides mentorship to individuals from a CUGH member institution; preference is given to individuals from global health programs that are in their early or middle stages of development.
- The mentorship period lasts a year, starting in Fall 2019. Following an initial formal introduction, it is expected that there will be frequent contacts (typically, a 30-minute telephone meeting every 1-2 months) over the course of a year, with additional e-mail correspondence as needed.
- A site visit could be part of the program, with costs of travel covered by the institution requesting assistance.
- We have found this to be a very useful program for our members. We hope that you will consider joining our team either as mentor or mentee.
Criteria:
- This mentorship program is intended for institutions that want to develop their global
- health programs. It is not intended to provide career guidance for individuals.
- Mentors must be either individual or institutional CUGH members.
- Mentees must be staff or faculty at a CUGH member institution.
- Mentees are expected to use the knowledge obtained through GHPAS to improve their institution's global health program.

Member Spotlight:
Global Public Health at Boston College
Boston College launched a program in Global Public Health and the Common Good in 2018. This program is embedded in Boston College’s liberal arts curriculum. It spans schools across the university. It is based in the Schiller Institute for Integrated Science and Society, a new transdisciplinary incubator that addresses the complex problems facing our common home in the Anthropocene Epoch.
A distinctive feature of the program that reflects Boston College’s Jesuit, Catholic tradition is a focus on the intersection of health and social justice and a commitment to exploring the ethical, moral, historical, economic, social and environmental determinants of health and disease.
Korean Society of Global Health
Congratulations to the Korean Society of Global Health on the publication of their new
open-access, peer-reviewed, online international journal
of Global Health Science (JGHS).

APPLY- Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill - November 19, 2019
Join us in Washington DC to meet with key offices responsible for funding of global health activities. Efforts will be made for you to meet with your Senator and Representative’s offices. With 2020 being an election year this is a particularly important time for us to inform US Congresspersons on the importance of US leadership and investments in global health to their constituents, community, country and the world.
STAR Collaboration Laboratory
The Collaboration Laboratory is
STAR’s
facilitated approach to test, refine, and document what works and what does not in creating and sustaining mutually benefiting academic partnerships. Through the Collaboration Laboratory, paired academic institutions from the U.S. and low- and middle-income countries will spend one year working toward a concrete goal or objective. STAR staff will document the partnerships' successes, challenges and lessons learned for internal and external learning.

Current Opportunities:
- Help STAR better understand the capacity needs of academic institutions engaged in global health by completing and sharing this brief survey by July 28: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/GCVMYKT
- Apply for the Collaboration Laboratory mini grants via ghstar.org. The Collaboration Laboratory is STAR’s facilitated approach to test, refine, and document what works and what does not in creating and sustaining academic partnerships. Through the Collaboration Laboratory, paired academic institutions from the U.S. and overseas will spend one year working toward a concrete goal or objective. Applicants are free to propose tasks that involve an academic institutional partner, are specific to global health work, and can be completed in fewer than 12 months. Applications close August 9 and the deadline for questions is July 22; send to academicpartnerships@ghstar.org.

Women in Medicine Summit: An Evolution of Empowerment
September 20-21, 2019 | Chicago, IL, USA
Barriers have existed for female physicians since the first woman was accepted into medical school. In 2016, nearly 46% of medical school graduates were women, yet women physicians remain underrepresented in leadership roles, both in and out of academia. The focus of this summit is to identify barriers women physicians face in the medical field and create action plans that can be executed at both the local and national level.
During the two-day summit, we will facilitate a consensus-driven agenda with breakout sessions and presentations by diverse women from various specialties and institutions to deliver evidence-based talks and present tools and solutions to be utilized in working towards fixing the system and closing the gender gap across all specialties in medicine. The summit will empower female faculty at various stages of their careers to develop skills and networks to facilitate success within their own specialties, as well as make positive changes within the healthcare system.

Call for nominations for GHTC Innovating for Impact Awards!
GHTC has opened nominations for our
2019 Innovating for Impact Awards
.
This initiative annually honors two congressional champions who have been strong supporters of global health R&D and one multi sector R&D partnership, supported by the US government, that has helped advance a high-impact global health technology.
Given your network of university stakeholders, many of whom are involved in global health research, we’d love if you could help us share this call for nominations with your membership. Attached is an email with additional details. Also attached is a social media toolkit to facilitate sharing. If there is anything else I can provide you with to make sharing easier with your network, let me know.

Brainstorming scientist subjects for our science heroes video series
GHTC is trying to put together a video series featuring different scientists/innovators across the country who are working to advance global health basic research and/or product development.
Our goal is to show how federally-funded global health research, taking place locally in communities around the US, has this incredible global impact. We are seeking suggestions from partners for scientists/innovators who they think would be compelling subjects for us to feature in the series. While we are open to many ideas, in particular, we’d love to identify subjects from “red” or “purple” states that may be less associated with this type of work, and we want to feature diverse subjects, so want to make sure we receive suggestions for scientists who are people of color.
The only “musts” are that the researcher/innovator’s work must be a least partially US government funded and they must work on basic research/product development for a neglected disease or condition or research intended to serve neglected health needs in low or middle income countries.

University of Toronto’s Global Women’s Health and Equity Fellowship -
Revised Application Deadline July 30, 2019
This program is operated in partnership with the Academic Model for Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH) in Western Kenya, and our partner institution, Indiana University. This fellowship program is two years in length with significant time spent in Eldoret, Kenya at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, where trainees will be under the direction of a local AMPATH supervisor. As the only Global Women’s Health and Equity fellowship in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Canada, this program responds to the need identified by trainees to acquire formal expertise in a global health context.
