Planning for College Expenses
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released their inflation report for the month of July a few days ago - read the report. The cost of education continues to outpace that of general inflation over time into the current recession (red line in the Federal Reserve Economic Database chart below) which is why we encourage all of our college bound Bears to utilize Student Services this year when it comes to help with college financial aid.

Combining Preparation with Planning for Success
The nearby map shows the world-wide situation at the start of August 2020 with respect to students being unable to return to school due to the Covid-19 coronavirus.
OCPS and Cypress Creek High School students have had an advantage over millions of students around the world. Our students have the option of using the latest technology to learn from home or they may return to campus next Friday; OCPS has a very rigorous curriculum which is being delivered online for the time being; food for the week is provided which can be picked up for free on campus; and the district employs thousands of skilled teachers who are constantly refining their craft in professional development sessions weekly. Many nations, and even other U.S. school districts, cannot offer these opportunities during the pandemic to their students. Sadly, those other students are losing valuable instructional time which cannot be recovered.
Granted, there are challenges with distance learning as we have seen in recent days, but our students are blessed versus many students around the world with zero options. Their schools are simply closed. So, how was OCPS able to achieve this success for our students? In large part, because OCPS was prepared. As an example, the Skyward Family Access student information system was brought online over a year ago to help our families long before anyone had heard of Covid-19.
There is a lesson on the importance of preparation combined with planning that our students can learn from. One great example of the difference in the two ideals was given by a Navy Seal that described it quite eloquently...
|
U.S. Navy Seals:
"You can go into battle with a map and a plan. But when you get on the battlefield and the terrain and conditions are different than what you expected, what do you then? Go with the terrain."
|
As for our Bears, we hope that they will both prepare and plan for the weeks ahead. Work off a plan each day, but prepare for unexpected interruptions, technology issues that might bubble up, or even losing time due to a health problem or family need. Using a daily planner is very smart and we recommend each student does so, but also be prepared for those unexpected events. If our Bears learn how to apply this now, it is a practice that will benefit them throughout their lives.
Make it a great week Bears!
