Our Fundraising Event and Jack Markell's
Cross Country Excursion
We were thrilled with the turnout we had for our fundraising event at the BBC Tavern and Grill in June! We saw many old friends of Delaware Greenways and were happy to welcome many new supporters. Thank you to our Guest Bartenders and all who came out or supported us from afar with their donations.

As we sent off our former governor Jack Markell on his country wide bike excursion that evening, we were excited to welcome him when he returned, with a rally at Brandywine Picnic Park and an escorted bike ride back into Delaware. After riding over 3600 miles he finished in Rehoboth Beach on August 8th. Tires to sand...what a way to finish! Congratulations Jack on your amazing and admirable accomplishment! Your efforts will help many!
HISTORIC PENN FARM NEWS
Welcome Reception held for our new
Historic Penn Farm Manager, Erin Kinley
In June we held a reception at the barn, featuring UD Creamery ice cream, to welcome Erin Kinley, our new farm manager. In attendance were Trustees of New Castle Common, Christina School District faculty, University of Delaware program leaders, and other dignified members of the community. Erin recently graduated from the Longwood Program at the University of Delaware, and brings a broad range of horticulture knowledge to the position, ranging from specialty crop production and plant biology, to public garden leadership and food management. Under her supervision, Delaware Greenways will continue to care for the farm and the acres surrounding it, and further develop its connections to the community.
Wheelys New Castle, our new Farmstand Operator, Opened for Business August 3rd!
Wheelys New Castle has been providing organic, fair trade, locally roasted coffee as well as healthy, tasty, real food options via their mobile cafe to local diners for some time. Now they will ALSO? have a stationary place to do the same. Additionally, local artists and artisans will be featured in the farmstand, and Fifer's Orchards will be back with their produce and other handmade farm goodies.

"We're so excited to have the opportunity to be at this beautiful farm, to work with the school district and Delaware Greenways", said Wheely's General Partner, David Casey. "Life is certainly about choices, and we provide a number of those, but giving people healthy living options, and contributing to a greener, more real food system, is clearly something both organizations are all about."

The stand, with Wheelys under it's roof, will remain open through Fall harvest, closing just before Christmas.
Produce Washing and Storage Areas
being used at the Farm
The installation of a washing station, as well as cold and dry storage at Historic Penn Farm, are much needed additions, felt especially by the WPHS (William Penn High School) Penn Farm students, who plant, grow and harvest their crops at the farm. Now they can wash and store their produce right next to the fields. Considering they've harvested 10,000 pounds of produce so far this season, the new amenities are a big help to the students' work.
Rent the Barn at Historic Penn Farm!
Did you know that the Historic Penn Farm barn can be rented during the months of April through October? The barn has a rustic beauty that makes for the perfect setting. We've hosted many weddings, company picnics, day camps, and other events.

Augustine Wildlife Area Signage
and Observation Decks
Delaware Greenways is working with the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control's Fish and Wildlife Division on designing new directional signs to replace the old ones (shown at right), for Augustine Wildlife Area located along the Delaware Bayshore Byway in New Castle County.  These signs will help guide visitors to amenities and scenic spots within the preserved land. Augustine Wildlife Area consists of 6 tracts of land totaling over 3,100 acres near Port Penn and the Delaware River. Delaware Greenways also assisted DNREC in completing a wildlife viewing observation deck on the Ashton Tract along Thorntown Road, north of Port Penn. Look for the signs along Route 9 guiding you to the tract. This Fall, another observation platform will be erected north of Port Penn along Route 9 in the Cooper Cross tact. We'll keep you up to date on when it's completed and open to the public. These decks are the perfect spot for travelers and wildlife enthusiasts to view the vast variety of waterbirds using the area, especially during the peak of migration in the Fall.

Delaware Bayshore Byway Extension
Have you traveled on the Delaware Bayshore Byway lately? Extending between the cities of New Castle and Lewes, the Delaware Bayshore Byway meanders more than 100 miles through some of Delaware's most scenic, historic and environmentally sensitive coastal wetlands. As part of its management of the Byway, DelDOT asked Delaware Greeenways to prepare a plan to sign the Byway. Using GPS technology, our map technician spotted some 200 signs designed to guide byway travelers by placing signs in advance of each turn and periodically along the byway route. The signs will be installed by DelDOT as funding permits.

Fun Fact:  In its leadership role in managing the Bayshore Byway, Delaware Greenways leads the Management Committee, which consists of representatives of the local communities, and the non-profit community, helping to preserve the Bayshore, and the residents and businesses all along the Byway. The Delaware Bayshore Byway is important to the state of Delaware, and we're serious in our commitment to its existence and relevance for residents and travelers a like.
Trails and Pathways News
Moving Trails Forward in Hockessin
Delaware Greenways salutes two volunteers who have worked tirelessly to develop a trail network in the Hockessin area. Dick Saunders and John Iwasyk, both of whom have and are continuing to serve Delaware Greenways as volunteers and Board Members, have led the organization's efforts, first by leading the charge to complete the Valley Road Pathway which extends from the Lantana Square Shopping Center to Swift Park. Now they are working to raise funds to connect the Valley Road Pathway to Colored School 107, a historic school that was once the subject of the Supreme Court Case, Brown v Board of Education, and on to Route 41 where it will connect future Auburn Valley Trail. Delaware Greenways salutes these members of our family as we provide technical support and encouragement as they continue to work to bring trails to the Hockessin area.

William Penn Foundation
Planning Grant Complete
In April 2016, Delaware Greenways was awarded a planning grant from the William Penn Foundation, to be used for the advancement of the Northern Delaware trail network which connects communities and popular destinations, including our beautiful parks and natural areas, and the Circuit Trails in Southeastern, PA. As a result of this grant, we established the 20-member Future Trails of Northern Delaware Coalition ( FTND Coalition Members ), comprised of civic organizations, corporations, hiking/biking clubs and other area non-profits. The grant also enabled us to develop a major trails network plan with the assistance of the coalition and develop a policy to integrate private, philanthropic funding into trail funding supplied by government to build more trails at a faster rate.
 Statewide Bicycle Policy Plan
Delaware Greenways is a member of the working group assisting DelDOT to develop the Statewide Bicycle Policy Plan designed to set the path for the future of bicycling in Delaware. The plan will increase the participation of local and county governments and create a place for organizations like Delaware Greenways and our coalition, in trail planning and project development process. Scheduled for completion in December, the plan also establishes a process to integrate non-traditional funding into the trail building process.  Delaware Greenways is pleased to be a part of this groundbreaking initiative of DelDOT and are watching many of the ideas we have advocated for incorporated into the plan.
