Dear friends and members,
This weekend we enter the season of Advent knowing that there is a lot happening in the church, in our homes and in the world around us. It is a time when so much is held together in a holy tension - darkness and light, stillness and activity, longing and fulfillment. The practices of the church and our worship ground us in the presence of the the coming of Christ. We practice patience. We light one candle at a time. We wait to sing carols and we decorate gradually. We don't rush into Christmas as the rest of the world has already done. We savor the time as we prepare to remember Christ's birth at Christmas and as we anticipate his second coming in the fullness of time. The time of pure celebration will surely come.
I look forward to this time of waiting, preparation and longing with all of you. Christ has come, will come again. See you at the table.

Celebration of Marshall Lundberg's life and ministry
On Saturday December 7 at 10 a.m. we will celebrate Marshall Lundberg's life and ministry. A Requiem Eucharist will be offered at 10 a.m. in the historic church followed by burial in the churchyard, and collation in the parish house. Please join your church in giving thanks for Marshall as you have known him as a brother in Christ and join with us in hosting his family and friends in this tender time. To contribute to the collation, please call Susan Kelchner at 683-9745.

Preparing for Worship This Weekend
A
lmighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Advent and Christmas Worship
All Advent and Christmas Worship services will be offered
in the St. George's Chapel. This is a wonderful opportunity to share the love of God and our community with friends and family who may be visiting or live locally.
Advent I
- 5 p.m. and 9 a.m. Wreath making follows both services.
- Pick up your St. Mary's shopping bag to bring food for the trees of light.
Advent II
- St. Nicholas Weekend, special visit and preaching from the bishop of Myra.
- Wine and Cheese follows 5 p.m. worship.
- 9 a.m. Kids invited to leave their shoes under the giving tree and receive a special treat.
- Giving Tree unwrapped toys are due by Sunday the 8th.
Advent III
- Gaudete - weekend of rejoicing and Christ is coming near. Wear pink or rose.
- Learn more about Gaudete Sunday here.
- Get your flower memorial and thanksgiving donations in. Deadline is this week.
Advent IV
- Come to worship this weekend as we make the final preparations in our hearts and in the chapel. We will be welcoming many at Christmas and your service of hospitality and worship presence are very important.
Christmas Eve
- 4 p.m. Holy Eucharist with piano and carols. Well suited for families with young children.
- 6 p.m. Holy Eucharist with piano, cello and carols.
Christmas Day
- 9 a.m. Holy Eucharist with piano and carols.
First weekend of Christmas - December 28-29
- Both services will have Christmas Lessons and Carols.
Feast of the Epiphany - January 5-6
- 5 p.m. worship followed by wine and cheese reception.
- 9 a.m. worship followed by community potluck.

 Wonderful Welcoming
The following people, including myself, were warmly welcomed as new members of our Church community last weekend with two celebratory events. On Saturday evening, we enjoyed a fun reception at the rectory with food and drink, and new friends in Christ. Most enjoyable was the discussion shared by all as everyone told some personal stories as well as what expectations and hopes they look forward to as part of our St. Mary's community. At worship on Saturday or Sunday, we joyfully signed our register of Baptised Persons, expressing our desire to live out our baptismal promises in fellowship with God's help, and that of the community; actively participating in the vitality of our ministries. -- Ray Edler

Coffee & Conversation Summary
Our open discussion last Sunday covered important topics, including a comprehensive overview by Jr. Warden, Paul Westrom on the challenges and progress being made with the Historic Church restoration. Jennifer led a discussion of our ongoing transition and the critical ministries involved, including the positive ways our laity is stepping forward to voluntarily fill needs, and perform works to insure no task is left undone. Karen then provided an overarching Biblical view on how faith communities work together to accomplish God's work in unity and love. The multitude of ministries at St. Mary's were elicited from the people in attendance, identified, and written on the whiteboard, which quickly filled. Excellent questions and suggestions were discussed on how best to accomplish some of these ministries going forward. Most importantly, we concluded in prayer; arm in arm, hands in hands, in a spirit of loving Christian community.

Our bishop will be visiting St. Mary's on February 23rd and will offer the rites of Confirmation, Reception, and Re-Affirmation for those who wish.

An Opportunity For Giving
Dear Friends,
Prior to our historic church renovation there were two crosses on the roof. Over the years they were damaged beyond repair and have been removed. Replacing them will cost $50,000.
As the roof is nearing completion, the staging will be coming down soon. To replace the crosses later will be more expensive. If someone is willing to make a donation for one or both crosses, please contact Jennifer by next Wednesday. If we do not hear from anyone, we will not replace the crosses at this moment in our stewardship of God's church.
Last weekend at the coffee and conversation we also learned about some of the unanticipated expenses of the restoration of the roof. Our treasurer, Christ Bartlett spoke about the funding of these. If members and friends have made pledges for 2020 and would like to pay them in 2019 it will reduce the amount we will need to draw from the endowment fund for the building.
I thank Paul Westrom and his team for all of their good work and dedication to this restoration project. I thank every member, friend and organization who has financially supported the effort thus far. We are doing the work of our generation to offer this holy church for future members, friends, and guests. Jennifer+

November and December donation focus is dental hygiene: tooth brushes, tooth paste, dental floss and mouth wash; Re. food items. stuffing/gravy/cranberry would be great as well. MLKC is trying to focus on providing fresh produce over canned as often as possible.
will be located in the parish hall starting Saturday, November 23rd. It will be decorated with approximately 100 colorful tags. Please take a tag (or two) and purchase a gift for a boy or girl as indicated on the tag. The age of the child you are buying for is on the tag. If you would like to purchase a gift certificate instead of a toy, please feel free to do so. We are also collecting wrapping paper, tape and bows. You can leave those items under the tree with your donation.
Please take a mitten tag, purchase a gift and return it to the parish hall, unwrapped, no later than Sunday, December 8th. If you have questions contact

MLKC Advent "Trees of Light"
Non-perishable Food Drive
St. Mary's will again be collecting non-perishable food donations for the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center Food Pantry over the Advent Season. Most needed items include canned protein--(tuna, chicken, hams, peanut butter), cereals, and vegetables. The pantry serves all in need all across Newport County.
This food drive begins at services during the 1st Sunday of Advent (November 30 / December 1). Members and friends of St. Mary's are asked to take a reusable St. Mary's tote bag with them after the services on November 30th and December 1st to bring food donations in to church during the Advent Season. The donations will be placed on two "Trees of Light" (built by Dave Ferkinhoff's skillful hands) that will be placed in St. George's Chapel.
The food drive will end on the weekend before Epiphany (January 4 & 5). All are
welcome to keep the tote bags after Advent!
CHRISTMAS FLOWERS
If you would like to give Christmas Flowers in memory of a loved one or in thanksgiving for a blessing, please pick up a Christmas Flower envelope, available in the Gathering Space. Return it to the office by Sunday Dec. 15th. Please feel free to put them in the collection plate.
