How can I describe the view from where I live? The house sits on the north side of the escarpment overlooking the Dundas Valley. The view is dominated in the distance by Hamilton Mountain and the far side of the valley that lies between. While I have been in isolation I have watched the snow covering the escarpment through our extended winter, I have seen the dull grey brown that was left after the snow melted, and then - almost overnight - an explosion of green as the leaves burst out on the trees.
In lockdown on my own, the view has become a companion for me.
I am comforted at night by the steadfast lights in the town below me and, if it is a clear night, I can see the Burlington Skyway in the distance. During the span of a day I can watch rain come and go. Mists will obscure the mountain on the other side and then later it will be a blaze of bright sunshine. Sometimes I can see the mountain, but the valley is completely fogged in as if Dundas were the fabled village of Brigadoon.
The continually changing view reminds me that everything is temporary: the weather, the seasons, even this crisis will pass eventually. My moods and feelings can change as quickly as the spring rains that cover the valley and then pass through.
When I remember that none of this is permanent, only our Creator is constant, I am reassured and I find hope for our future.
