Anaheim cases: 36,705

We continue to see many new COVID-19 cases in Anaheim and Orange County but there is some stabilization and signs of improvement.

While we are not out of the woods yet, we can find some optimism in that it appears we may be starting to flatten the curve of this winter surge.

Continue to fight COVID in all you do so we can -- finally -- get past this pandemic together.

Anaheim saw an increase of 1,961 cases in the past seven days, while Orange County saw 12,830 new cases in that time.

Anaheim is at a cumulative 36,705 cases, with 4,549 among children.

Orange County is at a cumulative 218,741 cases, with 21,912 among children.

Sadly, Anaheim has seen 503 people pass from complications of COVID-19, the condition caused by coronavirus. The county has seen a total 2,547 deaths.

Our hearts go out to the family and friends who have lost someone dear to them.

The county has processed a total of 2,519,520 polymerase chain reaction, or PCR, tests, the standard for diagnosing COVID-19 cases.

Orange County, along with a broader Southern California region, remains under a regional stay home order due to low ICU bed availability.

It's our best guess that the order will be in effect into February based on current trends in cases and hospitalizations.

As of today, the state reports our region's ICU availability at 0 percent. Orange County's ICU availability to treat COVID-19 patients is also at 0 percent

The county's current case rate is 67.1 per 100,000 residents.

Vaccines

We are at 30,000 vaccines given in Anaheim and counting!

Despite a brief closure due to winds this week, our Anaheim Super POD vaccination site is back up and serving more than 3,000 people every day.

Right now, only healthcare workers, first responders and those 65 and older can get the vaccine.

Supply of the vaccine in Orange County is sufficient for upcoming appointments and second doses, but is still limited. Those looking to make appointments must have patience, as the waiting list is long.

Anaheim staff, volunteers and Anaheim Fire & Rescue continue to serve a leading role at the super POD site, with support from the county of Orange, neighboring city workers and other volunteers.

This weekend, the county also plans to launch a second super POD site at Soka University in Aliso Viejo.

Vaccines are given by appointment only. No walk-ups are accepted at any of the vaccine sites.

When you come for your appointment, please arrive no earlier than 15 minutes before your appointment time and wait in your car until your time slot.

Be aware of weather and bring warm clothing or an umbrella if needed. Bring snacks and water.

Make an appointment at Othena.com.

Othena, the county's vaccine registration system, has updated its website and mobile app this week to create a more streamlined process for making appointments.

Instead of checking for available appointments online periodically, now you can just register online with your information and be entered into a virtual queue.

You'll receive an email when it's your turn to make an appointment and will have a four-hour window to respond and select your date and time.

Of course, the county's system is still not perfect and we know some have experienced difficulties or issues with Othena.

The county has set up a vaccine help line and email address. Call (714) 834-2000 or email  support@compositeapps.net.

Anaheim is also working closely with the county on mobile vaccine clinics in our city to help those who may have difficulty getting to super site or seniors who need help with the app.

We held our first by-appointment, mobile senior vaccine event today at East Anaheim Gymnasium, vaccinating 500 seniors from across Anaheim and Orange County.

It's our hope to offer more mobile vaccine clinics in the coming days and weeks.

If you'd like to help, the county is looking for volunteers to help at the vaccination sites. Sign up here.

Free COVID-19 testing

Testing is available at more locations than ever in Anaheim, still at no cost to residents.

We have three walk-up kiosks across our city, drive-thru testing at the Anaheim Convention Center, and school-site testing through our partner Latino Health Access three days a week.

Find a list of dates and times and make an appointment at Anaheim.net/testing

Please note: Testing is BY APPOINTMENT ONLY!

Testing continues to be is in high demand as we make our way through the recent coronavirus surge in Orange County.

If you show up without an appointment, you'll have to wait until all appointments have been taken, which could take hours.

Making an appointment online is easy to do for any site, whether it be drive-thru or walk-up.

Fight COVID: on essential outings

Our public awareness campaign is out in full force across Anaheim, encouraging residents to fight COVID in all you do.

We need to keep our guard up, no matter where we are. Fight COVID at home, at work and on essential outings.

What does it mean to fight COVID at essential work?

Wear a mask at all times, and make sure others around you are also wearing them. Wash your hands frequently or use hand sanitizer.

Keep your distance from your coworkers whenever possible. Hold virtual meetings where you are able.

Temperature checks are common at many workplaces, make sure you participate by taking your temperature each day before you begin work. And if you think you've been exposed, it's a great idea to go and get tested.

If you're feeling sick or have a high temperature, don't go to work. If you start to feel ill while at work, let your supervisor know and go home. Employers are required by law to accommodate you.

These are easy steps that can help prevent the spread of coronavirus.

While cases seem to be slowing a bit, we all need to keep doing our part to keep that downward trend going and get past this pandemic together.

Thank you for joining us in our campaign to keep Anaheim safe.
