Jim Kurtz helps WWII Veteran Bob Cleverdon receive the French Legion of Honor Medal. Here's how it happened:
Jim writes: "I met
Bob Cleverdon
by chance in a local grocery store about a year ago. He was wearing a WWII B-24 hat, which automatically drew me to him. I told him about
THE GREEN BOX
and he gracefully allowed me to read it to him over a period of weeks, as he is 97 years old and has failing eyesight. We became fast friends. Bob was lead navigator in the European Theater, and a few of his bombing missions took him to France. I realized that fact qualified him for the French Legion of Honor. I filled out all the necessary applications for this award with the help of his daughter, Lisa. Recently the French Consulate in Boston contacted me and said the application had been accepted. Bob received his award Sunday, July 14, Bastille Day, at the French Consulate Residence in Boston at a celebration with two other veterans (Charles Rogers and Richmond Bell). I am so happy for him!"
We filmed this celebration as part of
The Green Box: At the Heart of a Purple Heart film.
