MAYOR'S MESSAGE
From Mayor Leonard Desiderio...

One topic that is being discussed around many kitchen tables in Sea Isle City is “what type of recreation facility the former public school on Park Road should become.” As I mentioned in my last Mayor’s Message, we held a successful Town Hall Meeting on June 29, during which many residents and property owners expressed their opinions about the future of that facility. One of the SICPD's initiatives this summer is to enforce bicycle laws and educate the public about bicycle safety - and the importance of following "the rules of the road." The SICPD reminds all bicyclists that they are required to comply with motor vehicle laws and:

·        Obey traffic signals
·        Ride single file on the right side of the road
·        Have lights on their bikes at night
·        Kids under age 17 must wear helmets

Bikes on the Promenade:  Bicyclists are reminded that they are permitted on the Promenade only on weekdays from 5:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 5:00 a.m. to 12 noon. Bikes are not permitted on the Promenade at any other time.

BEACH CLEAN-UP RESULTS
Report Shows What Was Discovered
on Sea Isle City's Beaches

Sea Isle City’s Environmental Commission has released the overall findings from this year’s Spring Beach Clean-Up on April 13. Thanks to the many volunteers who gathered and documented the debris they found on Sea Isle’s beaches and dunes that day, our shoreline was beautified and officials were able to pinpoint what types of items were collected.

Don't Forget: The Environmental Commission reminds everyone to please put trash and recyclables in their proper receptacles, and to prevent the wind from carrying food wrappers and other items away while on the beach.

SPOTLIGHT ON HISTORY
Prohibition in Sea Isle City

World War I was over. The Armistice had been signed on November 11, 1918, and the Treaty of Versailles endorsed six months later. The Roaring Twenties were set to begin – fueled by the infamous Eighteenth Amendment to the Constitution which prohibited the manufacture, transport, and sales of spirited beverages. The country went officially “dry” on January 17, 1920.

New Jersey’s position on the subject was pretty clear. It was the last state to ratify the amendment, and it had managed to hold off until two years after it actually went into effect. (Rhode Island never did ratify it.) One candidate for New Jersey governor in 1919, Edward I. Edwards, exclaimed, “I am as wet as the Atlantic Ocean.” He won. READ MORE
